midnight tea

the pain of looking back
can tear hearts in half
cringing
wincing
crying
bleeding

the sound of the kettle screaming
smoke escaping profusely
visions blur
and mind can't focus on anything but that one scene
where the main character experiences dramatic irony
doesn't see the signs foreshadowing to this exact moment in the future
filled with regret
humiliation
terror
disappointment

turn down the fire
let the volume decrease
causing a small sense of relief
pour into cup
add sugar and honey
try to hide bitter taste of what isn't funny
stir
like how feelings do, along with boil up and blow
lift up to lips
take a sip
let the pain of the past burn your tongue
let the sensation remind to move with caution
let the aroma of the spices relax mind and heart
let it speak of forgiveness, letting go, & moving on
for if it all didn't happen, truly knowing better would've never been acknowledged
like a forgotten, unfinished song.
