I would have liked to try those wings myself ]—Waiting for Icarus by Muriel Rukeyser
to fly away from the hard truth
that is reality.
To feel free.
Released from the cage that refuses
to let me see the beauties of the world.
Released from the ball and chain
that keeps me down instead of reaching
for the heavens.
To feel free to explore and experience.
But instead I must stay
with the fallen.
To stay staring at the night sky
that's always filled with little specks
as bright as angels.
To stay yearning for something more,
To stay feeling a part of me
has been ripped off my back.
And that it would take a miracle
to feel whole again.
But instead I must sit and wait
until it is my turn to join the stars
above the clouds.
