"He was getting better!" Shota accuses.
Dr. Yashido sighs and goes to sit on the table, motioning the heros to the couch. Yamada obliges, and glares at his husband to follow suit, but he remains standing with his arms crossed with a pointed glare, "This is not a disorder that happens in a straight line, I made you aware of this when I first began my sessions with Izuku."
"Yeah but this," Mic begins, putting his head in his hands, "He's never had an episode like this before."
"That's because you two have kept him safe from any type of harm that could remind him of his past, it was bound to happen at some point-"
"What the fuck does that mean?"
"Shota!"
"Mr. Aizawa," Dr. Yashido interrupts before the two can start an argument in his office, "Please let me finish." The man looks at his husband who gives him a look, and he slouches into the couch cushion, "This was bound to happen eventually because of how he's improving. He has confidence. He feels independent but not alone. He took the initiative to leave a scary environment but return to a home that gives him comfort. He feels safe enough to return home when he's panicking. If this had happened seven months ago in the hospital, no doubt would he have run off again or needed a sedative to calm down."
"Is it going to happen again?" Yamada asks after a moment of silence.
The doctor looks between the two, both desperate to hear words he cannot give them. He runs his hands through his hair and pushes his glasses up his nose, "I am a parent of three, you know? I know how it feels to see your kid in pain and the desire to roll them in bubble wrap and never let them out of your sight. But raising a kid in fear is no way to raise a kid.
"Instead, all you can do is give them the right tools to get through hard stuff. So yes, it will most likely happen again, probably multiple times. But each time he'll learn new tricks to get through it. I've given him some coping mechanisms to practice when he feels anxious so when something like this happens again, he might be able to call someone for help. The tool you give him is support and resources, and you are doing an excellent job with that."
Hizashi glances at Shota who's just looking quietly at his hands, "I'm sorry, but that doesn't make me feel too much better."
He chuckles lightly, "I would be genuinely surprised if it did."
**************
Leaving the office, Izuku bounces ahead to the car. The first night was rough, he woke both of the men a few times with his nightmares (he had stayed in their bed). The second night was a little better, though he did wet his bed, but he didn't wake up from any bad dreams when he joined his parents. The third night he managed to stay in his bed without any accidents, but the parents were woken up a few times during the night. This would be the fourth night, and neither one knew what to expect considering they were going back to the regular patrol schedule.
They stop for ice cream on the way home, planning on having leftovers for dinner anyway. Aizawa practically drops his cone when their son turns to them and asks, "Am I going back to school tomorrow?"
Hizashi grips the other mans arm and responds with a caring smile, "If you would like to."
He looks from one man to the other before landing on Shota, "Dad?"
His husband tightens his grip, unnecessarily but worth noting, "As long as you feel safe going, you can go."
They finish their ice cream and within no time they're home with Izuku playing with action figures on the floor and the two men quietly chatting in the kitchen, "I don't like this," Aizawa grumbles.
