-chapter 8-

I've been with Sevika for 2 weeks now, and I'm fairly sure that I'm five and a half feet into a six foot grave. Even though I haven't seen or been bugged by Jinx once since the incident with Silco, working absolutely nonstop with Sevika definitely makes up for the torture I would experience with Jinx. The last two weeks have felt like hell, and they've made my first day of training with Sevika feel like a walk in the park. I'm decently sure it's not healthy to work someone so harshly on such a regular basis, but at the same time, I have grown to like the sense of importance I feel training with her. On the other hand, it does make me feel bad, knowing that she's practically preparing me to betray her- I've forgotten my true goal here a few times, and remembering feels almost like a slap on the face- but I can't get sensitive now.

We stand on the streets of the Undercity outside of The Last Drop, Sevika now wearing a long, draping cloth to cover her shimmer powered arm. The other hand holds a lit cigar, it's end smoldering slowly. I nearly mistake the guards outside for machines as we continue into the venue, until I recognize faces behind the glass window of the helmets that contain them, their expressions empty and dormant. The lights I had recently seen installed around the sign of the tavern now light up a nasty green color, casting the street outside in a sickly glow. The Undercity truly changes every day, it seems like.

"I remember this place before Zaun." Remarks Sevika, taking a thoughtful pull off of her cigar. "It looked far different. Did you grow up here in the Undercity, Y/N? " Sevika questions, though her tone doesn't indicate that she's entirely interested.

"No ma'am. I never got the pleasure of seeing this place before Silco." I respond, accidentally grimacing at his name. When I realize the way I said it, I cringe, hoping that she doesn't notice; which, to my chagrin, she does. Sevika's face contorts into a frown momentarily, her confusion for how I said Silco's name obvious. "I kid," I say quickly, attempting to resolve her suspicion and cover my tracks. This seems to satiate her confusion.

"Well, lucky you for not coming from the same dirt as me." She says dismissively. She takes one more drag off of her cigar before motioning to the door. "After you," she says, indicating that I should open the door. My body lags for a moment before I lean in to open it, and my muscles protest with every move I make.

"Ah, it's Sevika and her mini me." A faceless voice calls out from the depths of the smokey bar as we enter. I roll my eyes and Sevika only chuckles, immediately lifting a hand for the bartender with her pointer and middle finger.

"2 of the regular." She calls out. The bartender only nods and continues his task of scrubbing the bar. In my past two weeks of living in Sevika's shadow, we've frequented this bar; I know exactly where we're headed as Sevika pushes through a cloud of smoke emanating from a group of people towards our usual spot. We both sit down heavily, chairs squeaking beneath us. My body aches in response, and I wince.

"Y'know, Sevika, you better be careful." I say sarcastically, rubbing a particularly angry spot where my eyebrow had been split a few days before. "With all the bruises and shit, people might think you beat me or something."

Sevika laughs for a moment to herself, musing over my comment. "Yeah, something like that." She considers her slowly smoking cigar before continuing. "So kid, I've got to go along on a shipment run and-"

The bartender emerges through the smoke, placing two drinks on the table. Sevika pauses, sliding one to me without showing him so much as a crumb of acknowledgment.

"-And I can't bring you." She finishes, taking a swig off of her drink.

I furrow my brows, lifting the glass to my nose and inhaling.
