-chapter 31-
Silco sits in his chair as he always seems to be, gazing idly at a paper in front of him. I stand rigidly by the doorframe, closing the door slowly behind me. When he finally looks up, he motions me closer with the smallest of smiles.
"Come on in."
I take only a single step closer to his desk, hands clasped behind me. It takes all of my willpower not to let my hand bolt to my gun, but I force oxygen in through my nose, praying it keeps me still.
"Sevika said you wanted to talk to me?"
My voice is steadier than I feel.
"I do." Silco confirms.
He motions for me to come closer again, pointing at the seat across from his desk. I don't. His eyebrows raise once in surprise before his face settles into indifference and he continues.
"I can't help but notice how close you've gotten with my daughter."
If I was a dog, my hackles would be raised. "What about it?"
Silco taps the wood of his desk with his fingers, almost impatiently. "Since she's met you, I've seen things. I've seen her act in ways she has never acted before, or worse, act in ways she used to act." When he makes eye contact with me again after this statement, his eyes are cold. "Your influence is concerning."
I can't help but let a scoff slip from my lips. "I don't understand what you're implying, Silco."
"I'm implying," He rises from his chair, "that I know about the little secret you two have going on." He rounds the desk slowly before leaning on the opposite side of it, maintaining a comfortable distance. The fire in his eyes after the statement makes my next words flow from my throat before I can even register them.
"What, that I'm dating your daughter?" I snap. My hands lace and unlace themselves as sudden anger courses through my veins. "What about it? Do you have a problem with the fact that I actually make her happy?"
"I have a problem with you being a shitty influence on her." Silco spits back, one hand grasping the edge of the desk like a lifeline back to Earth. "You don't know how long I've trained her to be who she is today and I will not let some useless, scummy child like you take that away from her."
"Take that away from her, or take that away from you?" My face is flushed now, and I have to dig my fingernails into my skin to slow myself down and keep from tripping over my words. "It's no secret that you use her like some fine tuned weapon, everyone knows it, and you think I'm not going to see right through that? What, do you think I'm fucking stupid?"
Silco opens his mouth to speak, but I steam ahead, words pooling in my mouth faster than I can spit them out.
"You only love her because she aids you. I love her because she has lit up my life in a way I haven't known in a very, very long time. I see how she changes when she's with me. I've seen her walls crumble and I've seen who she truly is, who she could be without your hand in things. I know about Powder. I know about her family. I know about her past. Jinx feels comfortable enough with me to let down her guard. You've only forced her to close herself up for your own benefit and called it love, tying it all together nice and neat with the title of "father" like a fucking bow on a present."
"That's enough."
"Just because I treat her in the way she should have always been treated doesn't mean that you can take that away from her, Silco. I'm giving her the love she deserves. I know you can't say the same for yourself, but that isn't my fault or my problem, you piece of fucking-"
