-chapter 16-

My hands fumble slightly as I lace up my pair of weathered work boots, a gift from Sevika. They're just a bit bigger than my feet, fitting sort of like clown shoes, but I don't complain. The aglets slip out of my fingers over and over, but I hardly recognize it as Sevika answers my question.

"Wouldn't you like to know." She scoffs, obviously brushing off my attempt at conversation.
I sigh in annoyance, dropping my foot loudly to the floor before finally making eye contact with her again.

"Yeah, I actually would like to know, Sevika."

Sevika merely hums in response, still not paying any attention as she loads bullets carefully into a gun. My own lays on the bed beside her, waiting for its own turn to be loaded as well. She finishes hers, holsters it, and reaches for mine.

I push up from where I'm seated, striding to her and immediately invading her space in my frustration. She scowls back at me from over the barrel of my gun, her bold eyebrows downturned and deep set eyes menacing. "Seriously, Sevika, I at least deserve a response. Why didn't you tell me we were going on a shipment run?"

"Kid, I told you I just didn't want you to know. Leave it at that."

I glare back, hardly intimidated. "So you just-"

Sevika pushes further into me, seeming to grow an extra foot as she cowers above my frame. My neck cranes back as the shadow of her body falls over me and her eyes grow even harder and colder than before. Now, her look strikes a bit of genuine fear into me. She's more pissed than I thought. "I said leave it at that. I won't tell you again."

My jaw immediately shuts, teeth clicking together harshly in my mouth. I cower backwards, desperately trying to get out of her fierce gaze that practically has me in a chokehold beneath her. My knees quake a little as I do so. When I feel like I'm at a safe distance away, I allow my back to relax slightly.

"Look, I'm sorry, whatever I did to piss you off..." I mumble, studying the ground. Anything to not make eye contact with her.

I hear Sevika sigh, and I can hear the remorse laced through it. At this, I look up- an ounce of regret flashes across her irises for a moment at the fear in my own. "Y/N, I'm not mad at you."

"Is that so?" I ask cautiously.

She shrugs, her eyes and stance softened. Raising my gun again, she continues to load it. "I wanted this to be a surprise. You have worked hard for this, and I've pushed and pushed and watched you grow. I wanted to see how you did on a shipment, not knowing that we were going on it until we got there. I didn't want you to overthink anything and affect your performance." She finishes with my gun and flips it deftly in her hand, from holding the butt end to holding the barrel and offering the stock to me. "You understand now?"

I pause, considering her words and studying the gun in her hands. It's not very often that Sevika shows genuine emotion to me in the form of words and not downright mean teasing, so I relish the moment. After a minute, I nod and reach for the gun to holster it at my hip. Sevika laughs under her breath, shaking her head.

"She really does fuck up everything, huh?"

Immediately, my guard raises again. "You can't blame her for something she had no idea of, Sevika." I snap. The words come out harsher than I intend, and Sevika looks back at me, confused and annoyed. She opens her mouth to speak, but I shake my head and begin to head for the door.

"Never mind. Let's just go."

It's still dark out as we approach the airship. Glancing around, I immediately recognize more of Silco's muscle surrounding the loading dock. I feel uncomfortable with all of their eyes on us, so I glance to Sevika- catching my movement, she glares back down at me.
