-chapter 26-
"You... Killed my family."
This moment feels suspended in time, everything seeming to come to a standstill on the streets around us. Jinx's eyes are wide, and she blinks rapidly as she tries to understand. "What?" Her words leave with the same tone and cadence my own did- barely above a whisper, voice unsupported, syllables halting.
"You did this." I begin, one weak arm lifting to point to the decrepit house beside us. "You started this fire. You were the one who killed my family."
"I..." Jinx takes a step back, eyes falling to the cobbles below us as she shakes her head in disbelief. "No... No, I didn't. You're- You're not from Piltover."
My own realization begins to set in as tears cascade freely down my face. I don't feel them. I'm nodding slowly before I can realize it, hands balling into the fabric of my jacket. "Yes you did. You did this. I can't... You..."
I'm taking steps backward now, and Jinx is taking steps forward in an effort to maintain the space between us. Her eyebrows are knitted downward, eyes searching my face desperately.
"I... I didn't know, I... No, this can't be right."
I can't find any words. My tears are dripping down my neck, into my shirt.
"This isn't right, I..." Jinx's own tears begin to well on her lower lashes, threatening to spill over as a disconcerting laugh bubbles from her lips. "No, I didn't... I wouldn't do that to you, I wouldn't!"
She's laughing now, but it has an edge to it that makes my skin crawl. She's laughing and crying, shaking her head as she wavers on the balls of her feet. Her eyes are wild, darting around and around as if to find some sort of saving grace in her surroundings.
"This is a joke, right? Ha, ha, very funny, Y/N! Was this your idea of a date? It's very funny! But I- but I..."
Jinx's voice cracks and fades as I shake my head, horror apparent on every feature. I can feel that I've sunken in on myself, my eyes pained from the tears and the way that they're scrunched and my stomach flipping over and over in a way that makes me feel like I'm going to be violently sick. As turmoil races through me, a singular phrase is all that makes up my thoughts.
"You did this." My voice is hoarse. "I can't believe you did this."
My steps backward become quicker as the need to get away from her becomes overwhelming. My heart seems to be beating at the base of my throat, strangling me. All that leaves my lips are parts of words, choked off syllables, and I'm turning towards where we came from.
Before I can get very far, I'm yanked back around by my wrist; my eyes fall to where the contact is, before following the arm slowly back up to Jinx's face.
"Please don't leave me." Her voice is wobbly. I can see Jinx's soul in her eyes, breaking again as she pleads for me. I don't register it as I shake her off, my face sopping with tears and my mind entirely whisked away. "Please."
I can't utter another word as I walk away from her.
"Y/N, please! PLEASE! No, no, no-"
Her voice fades out behind me as I push through the crowds of people walking along the sides of the streets. I draw my jacket around me, desperately holding onto my pace in an attempt to stay incognito. The hood of my jacket sits low on my brow, and I'm thankful for it, and without looking up once, I trek towards the bridge. The bridge that connects the two worlds; my home prior, and my home now. The latter has never felt more comforting as my feet crunch on the familiar dirt of the Undercity. I blink rapidly in an attempt to clear the blurriness. Nothing helps.
