Getting used to the 'normal' daily routine in Taalen always took me two to three days. After this period of time had passed, I was in the picture with everything going on, it was like I had never left the castle. With Nilfgaard merging with the elves, Weg became more and more nervous about the future which was why she held a lot of meetings. I wasn't very good with tactics, so I didn't give much input in those conversations. I preferred helping around the castle with the decorations of the ballroom, watching the children for a while or taking care of the animals.
The rest of the Court of Owls came back day after day, telling what they had experienced out there in the wild and exchanged news about the political situation. Half of us were back in Taalen when a farmer stood in front of our gates, asking for help. Weg allowed me to take the job, it was only a day's ride away from home, the promised coin was good and the farmer described a beast that sounded awfully like a basilisk.
Besides, I was rather out in the nature on a hunt than starring at the continents map for hours without getting any idea of what to do about our enemies while the others discussed strategics. I packed my small traveling bag, gathered my weapons and got on my horse to follow the farmer to his home.
The whole village had fled from the beast that already took three lives and stayed in the closest town until the monster was gone. I told the farmer to join them and wait for me there, I could come to get them when the creature was dead, and they could safely return to their homes. Leaving Cene close to the village in case I needed to get away, I took my sword and knives with me. The monster was able to move fast, and I needed to get as close to it as possible in order to kill it, so ranged weapons like my bow were useless.
With slow and quiet steps, I made my way through the silent village. It was tiny, just a few houses alongside the main road but the monster was able to hide anywhere. Maybe it was even sleeping in a basement, these bastards moved like weasels. But I got lucky, I didn't need to search for too long, I spotted the basilisk between two houses. Unfortunately, the thing turned around as I tried to get closer to it, so there was no time for me to make a plan on how to attack.
I drew my sword as the creature jumped around and hissed at me, knowing I was here to end its life. You could tell by the body structure that it was a female, males were much larger and more dangerous. But why would it kill three humans? Aggressiveness wasn't what they were known for, usually females were looking for a quiet place to lay their eggs, males were the ones always out to make war.
Jumping to the side, so the basilisk wasn't able to dagger me with its sharp teeth, I swung my sword through the air. A scratch on the monster's head made it hiss again. It started walking towards me and I took my chance to run around it. The creature didn't catch onto my plan, tried to follow me with its long neck and stopped in motion when it finally spotted me on the other side, but it was already too late for it.
My sword cut right through its head, black blood splattered around and unfortunately my amour got pretty dirty. The body fell to the ground and a big pool of blood built itself around the dead basilisk. I stood over it, slowing my heartbeat down again and looked for something to clean my sword. You didn't want blood to stain the blade, but I found a piece of old clothing nearby. I rubbed the blood from the steel as I made my way towards the south part of the village.
