❝I have something to lose. My heart. It would be very hard to put it back together if it would be broken by you.❞
❝I would never hurt you.❞

The castle was in a chaotic state when I accompanied Ciri, Geralt and Jaskier into the south wing in the early afternoon. Guests would arrive in an hour and Katla had made last moment changes on a few things, causing a even more problems that were already happening. She stressed everybody more out than it was necessary and even Hertha had detached herself from the situation.
But my sister didn't come very far, we met her in one of the main. To my surprise, she had a crying child in her arms. She sighed in anger and relief when she saw me and rushed over to me, handing the girl over. "Please, take her!"
"Who's is it?" I asked confused and started to gently rock the three-month old. "And why do you have the child?
Hertha shrugged her shoulders and stepped away again. "I have no idea, a maid just handed her to me because Katla screamed for somebody to help her."
I raised my eyebrows. "Things are going well, I assume."
"Don't even ask ... Can you bring her to the nursery? I was told that hers is the empty bed – Thank you!"
She was off again before I could even react. The baby stopped crying and leaned against my chest, closing her eyes. It was tired, the loud noises and rush seemed to upset her, all she wanted was a calm nap.
"She still hates children?" Geralt asked when she was gone.
"Well, hate is a strong word ..." I replied, trying to sound diplomatic although I wanted to agree with him.
"Can I hold her?" Jaskier asked to my surprise when I started walking again.
"Sure."
The bard was carefully rocking the little girl and a smiled appeared on his face when he saw her closing her eyes in comfort. It was the first time since he had come to Taalen that he smiled from his heart, without acting.
For a moment, I thought about what it would be like if things between him and Gertha would have worked out. In other circumstances, he might be holding his own daughter in his arms right now. And Gertha would be still living in the City of Light, reigning as our Queen.
"Come," I said softly and walked down the corridor. "Let's put her down for a nap."
Jaskier laid the baby in its crib and tucked her in with a blanket. Then, he watched the baby drift off to sleep with a sad smile.
"Is he alright?" Ciri behind me whispered.
"Better not mention to him that Gertha's coming tonight."
"She is?" Geralt asked quietly.
"Mhm," I made. "I'm not sure if I'll tell her that he's hiding here."
"Would be the best."
"They are all adorable," Jaskier said when he came back to us. "Hard to believe they'll slaughter monsters one day."
