The Court of Owls was in utter shock when they heard about Gertha's pregnancy. Everybody was of course happy for her but scared of what would become of her and the child. Our former Queen agreed on taking the test in secret, she disguised it as a visit from Taalen as she told the King about it. A day later, Weg and Katla sat across from me and Geralt in the Queen's carriage.
After I had told him and Jaskier what had happened on the night Gideon died, Geralt wanted me to show him where it happened. He thought there might be still a clue about the Wild Hunt. I only agreed because Weg caught word of it and encouraged me to go - She was as keen on finding the Wild Hunt as Geralt.
The carriage ran over the road towards our neighbour that had brought so many troubles to our gates in the past. And now Gertha was their prisoner for lifetime. Sometimes I thought it had been a big mistake for her to accept the king's offer - the marriage and the tendencies were forgotten. We should have attacked them and taken their land. I knew I wouldn't be the only one in the front line for this attack, but Gertha made us promise to do no such thing. But we would break their walls down if they would ever mistreat our sister, so much was clear. And right now, there wasn't only her life at stake but her child's as well.
"Why did she even sleep with him?" I asked out loud. "I can't make any sense out of it."
"Maybe she was really drunk," Katla suggested helpless because she couldn't believe it either. From what we had told her about Gertha, it seemed so unlikely she would have slept with the King. Marriage was where she would draw the line, she didn't owe him anything after saying ‚Yes' at the alter - And she only did that to protect her people. "The King is a heavy drinker, there must be a lot of celebrations."
"Or he forced her." Geralt said out loud what I was fearing. What we all were fearing. "And if so, be sure he is going to be a dead man."
"But you won't get the chance to do it yourself, Witcher. I will do it when the time comes." Weg said in a deep tone and I knew she meant it. "I'm the one that didn't stop her ..."
"No, you're not," I disagreed. "Not even you could talk Gertha out of this. She saw it as her duty to us."
Katla put her hand on Weg's arm. "Everything will be fine, Your Majesty. She is going to be fine. And the child as well."
I prayed to Destiny and the Light that the mage was right. Just this one time.
Geralt looked over to me. "We should take our leave now."
I knocked on the wall behind us, telling the driver to stop. The carriage slowed down and Geralt opened to door, stepping outside to untie our horses.
"Good luck," I said to Katla and Weg. "May the Light protect you."
"May Destiny guide you, Visna." Katla said with a confident smile.
"Sent Gertha my wishes."
"We will." Weg nodded. "The Lights are on, no matter where we are."
