Ciri promised to me to get her things from the study and clean her room while Geralt and I went downstairs so I could take a look at his wound. I told her it would only take a few minutes and afterwards we would speak about today's reading.

"Take a seat," I said as we reached the laboratory, pointing at a stool next to the table. "I'll get the supplies."

"It's just a scratch, Visna." Geralt sighed but did as he was told.

He removed his shirt while I put the things that I needed on the table next to him. I took a sharp breath when I saw the bloody wound on his back. "It's a pretty deep scratch."

"It will heal just fine."

"How did this even happen?" I asked, grabbing a bottle and a clean cloth. "This might hurt a little."

"I followed the monsters trails, they let into the woods nearby but-" He took a sharp breath when the alcohol on the cloth came in contact with his wound. I knew this wasn't pleasant, but it was necessary, which was why I gently tapped the cloth down the cut, working fast so the pain wore off quicker. "But before I could investigate further, I was attacked by some lost nekkers. These bastards are quick and one of them managed to slide his claw across my back. Didn't live long, though."

"How many were there?" I threw the bloody cloth away and grabbed a bowl filled with herbs that would help the body to heal the wound.

"They wouldn't stay still for me to count them, even though I asked them nicely- Hmm!" He grunted as I pressed the herbs on his back, giving me an angry stare over his shoulder. "I don't know, maybe eight?"

"So it wasn't the full nest." I combinated, placing the bowl on the table and grabbing a long cloth to put it over the cut. "Mean they must belong to the rest we slaughtered right in front of the castle."

"I think so, too. I looked around the forest and it appears to be like the monsters came out of nowhere. The trails just start at one spot, lead in different directions for a while but then they come together near Taalen again." He shook his head. "It's odd ... as if they just started existing at this one particular place in the woods."

I finished my work with a knot on his shoulder, putting the things back at their place in the laboratory. "You mean, they started to show up out of nowhere?"

"I guess so."

"You said they were sent by somebody," I recalled. "Maybe this person teleported them to this spot and gave them the order to attack."

"Maybe it was Yennefer."

"What would she gain from it?"

"Ask me an easier question." He sighed. "Nobody ever knows what's going on in her head."

"I know somebody like that as well." I heard him letting out a noise that sounded like a small laugh as I closed the cupboard on the other side of the room. I walked back around the table to face him. "It should heal better now but take it easy."
