It wasn't any brighter in the morning than it had been at night. It was too early for the sun to peek out of the dense clouds above, and the light of their small fire made everything outside the light's reach pitch black. After a few minutes, they'd put away camp and secured the carriage. They weren't sure how they felt about leaving it unwatched, but they didn't have much choice. Now that they were rested it was time to enter the Chaos Shrine.
Conner took point with Bruce behind him, but as Emily stepped foot in the cave she felt something... off.
Emily spoke to Ava who was behind her. "Do you feel that?"
Ava nodded, looking deep into the cave. Much like outside it was pitch black, yet Ava seemed to focus on... something. "It is not the general presence of evil that's been following us."
"Following us?" Emily hissed.
Having noticed they stopped at the entry, Conner and Bruce turned back. "What's the hold up?" Bruce asked.
"I'm not surprised," Ava said. "An average monster's aura doesn't give off a physical feeling. This does."
Emily stared passed Conner and Bruce into the darkness. "Four... pairs of eyes..."
They all faced the darkness now, as a wicked wind blew through the cave. It wasn't much, just enough to push against them, sending them a very clear message. Leave.
"There's something dead inside," Emily mumbled.
Ava took point. "Not quite."
Bruce would have made a comment on how Ava started off refusing to talk, and now didn't seem to mind it, but he was more focused on paying attention to the growing ominous feeling coming from the darkness. Conner still held a torch to light the area around them, but Emily beside him was getting more and more worried, her face pale as she clenched her robes tightly around her.
Soon it wasn't just a feeling. They heard the scratching on the floor, like something clawing towards them. Hollow breathing, a rumbling moan, and the sound of bones cracking were all coming closer.
Conner drew his sword, holding it out beside his torch. "Get ready," he hissed. "Whatever's near is--!"
Suddenly a corpse was thrust upon Conner as he stabbed outward. His blade slipped through its ribs as it slid towards him. Instinctively he tried to shove it away, but it wouldn't budge. That's when he noticed it's grip on his armor.
It looked up at him, and screamed.
Bruce grabbed it by the face and ripped its head off, the body falling limp as its neck shredded. Conner kicked the corpse away as more started crawling into the light of the torch.
"Not quite what I was expecting," Conner admitted. "But it's just a monster like everything else!" He handed the torch off to Emily and slashed out at the Zombies.
