The guards carried me away to the Execution Stage. I saw the other town people gathering around it. My first instinct was to run, but how would I outrun these muscular and armed guards!?
I just followed the instructions that I was given by them: keep quiet and stand in a line. They also asked for names. Each child gave their name to the guards. They wrote them down on a piece of papyrus.
I sniffled quietly as I joined the line of children. It broke my heart to see a girl that was no more than three standing near me. Her red pigtails bounced around as she looked around with curiosity. I tried to grab someone's attention to tell them that Ashley made a stupid error. I wasn't supposed to be here.
I stood in line behind a boy with black hair. He gave me an odd look as he turned around.
"Brynn?" He said. I looked at him again.
"Warren!" I exclaimed. Warren was Ashley's boyfriend.
"Ashley won't be too happy to find out you'll be dead." I said with tears in my eyes.
"Yeah. What will the Queen do to us?" He said.
"Kill us with rage and she'll enjoy it too." I replied. My voice shook.
The stage had curtains for me to hide in. But I was in the wide open. It wouldn't work.
I looked at the crowd. Each person was blindfolded with red scarves this year; apparently word got out people were peeking at the executions and the government did something about it.
Then it hit me. There was no hope for me to escape. I felt my heart sink and more tears filled my eyes. I didn't allow for my knees to numb again so I knelt down a little to keep them from buckling.
My worrying was no use.
I planned what my last words would be. I looked at the town behind me...because soon I'll be in heaven, looking down at it. Soon, I'll meet with my dead sisters and brothers again.
More and more children were forced up on the stage. The queen was running late. Screams and sobs came from all directions- including the towns people on the ground. Commotion was forming from everywhere and I couldn't even distinguish who was crying and who was screaming.
There were at least 500 children on stage. And there were double that amount of people on the ground in front of the stage. I spotted Ashley. She was smiling. I looked at her as a guard blindfolded her. My mom and dad were lead to the rest of the crowd. I saw them whispering something. I really wished that I was age down there with them. But I wasn't.
Guards appeared from behind the stage with crates filled with torture weapons. Spiked balls, whips, bats, machetes, guns, needles and syringes packed in plastic bags, ropes, duct tape, knives...
My heart raced.
What the heck? This was worse than I expected. Warren tugged at my shirt's hem. He pointed at the crowd. I looked at what he was showing me. I squinted and looked into the distance.
"I see your family." he said. I nodded.
"Me too."
Then I returned my focus back on the crates of weapons.
Where was the Queen?
I spoke too soon. She appeared from backstage with a huge smile on her face. Her black eyes menacingly scanned the children. She stopped when she saw me, and she smirked at me. I looked away, in fear that I was first to die.
Warren raised an eyebrow at me. I stood frozen like a statue.
"Hello ladies and gentlemen!" The Queen said through the microphone.
