Twenty One

I gasped.

"Mom's missing?" I asked.

I peered at the door.

"Why is everyone making noise downstairs?" I asked.

"They shouldn't be." Ty said.
"I got the order to hide you and me in case if the burglar was after the royal people."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Are we gonna die?" I asked.

Suddenly, there was a loud scream and everything went silent. Ty grabbed my hand and squeezed it.

The air went cold. I listened to the words that a servant screamed.

"The Queen is gone!"

"She's not here! He got away with her!" A guard said.

I felt my heart speed up.

Then we heard footsteps banging against the stairs. Ty scooted closer to me and he huddled in fear.

"Ty? Brynn?" A warm voice said.

Lia.

We exhaled and climbed out from under the bed. I saw Lia's face fill with relief.

"I though he got you two too." He said as he hugged us.

"Is Mom missing?" Ty asked.

Lia frowned and nodded slowly.

"Yes. The guards tried to catch the burglar but it was too late." She said. "He already fled away...far away. We have to find her."

"We need to!" I said. "I can't become Queen Brynn just yet! I know nothing of being so royal; I'm only 14!" I said.

Lia stroked my head.

"Don't worry baby. We'll find Queen Mathilda and we will catch her kidnapper as well." Lia said.

We pulled apart from the hug. Ty flashed me a quick smile and we all walked downstairs to the foyer, where everyone was gathered in a coop. As we appeared, the murmur of the tiny crowd diminished. All eyes were on us. Iña gasped as she saw Ty and me and she ran up and hugged us. Her brown eyes gleamed with freshly formed tears. Everyone else smiled and stood in awe too.

"We thought you two were gone too!" Robert said as he held his hand to his forehead. He smiled and he turned back around to resume conversation with pregnant Ramona.

"Well, we're okay!" I boasted. I saw more people grin. At least there was a bright side to the situation.

Lia scurried outside into the dark atmosphere to go search the land, just in case in any other burglars were out there. A few guards went with her and so did a few servants. Some of the gardeners split up to ensure the safety of the castle. I returned my attention back to Iña.

She stepped back and she smiled with joy. The gardeners returned minutes later. A few shook their heads in disbelief. Lia came running in too. She looked disappointed that she didn't find our Queen. The guards entered the foyer with straight, emotionless faces. I looked at Ty. He looked down at the floor. I took hold of his hand and he looked at me. Everyone calmly settled in. No one spoke. The air was still cold. I glanced back toward Iña. Her happiness suddenly faded as reality set in.

Queen Mathilda was kidnapped.
