The night was warm, echoing with the sounds of the nocturnal world, the living night. An owl hooted persistently, throwing its voice out to the moon, the stars, the very corners of the universe. It was a forlorn sound. I'm alone, it sang. All alone. We're all alone. An entire world just full of people searching for what they can never have. So alone, so alone.

The stars were brought above the field, flickering like candles in windowpanes. But candles died, and so did stars. Everything dies eventually.

Your eyes watched the flicker of the fading fire, the orange flames flaring. You understood how late it was, though you couldn't sleep—your hands grasped onto the s'more you had made minutes before.

You bit into the sugary snack, tasting a blend of flavors in my mouth. The crackling of grass and leaves caused your head to jolt back to the noise.

Alex took a seat next to you, his head dipped down slightly. He's still in his sleepwear, presumably had previously been asleep.

The two of you sat in silence for a couple moments, the crackling of the orange flames accompanying the two of you in the night air.

Your eyes flickered to him, his glasses reflecting the orange hue. His eyes soon met yours, an almost guilty expression on his face as his lip trembled ever-so-slightly.

"What're you doing up so late—early?" You broke the silence, your hand fumbling with the bracelet on your wrist.

He took in a breath before responding.

"I could ask you the same question."

You almost laughed at his response, a small smile appearing on your face. "I couldn't sleep. Do you want a s'more?" Your eyes met his as he turned his head to you.

A smile appeared on his face—a genuine one.

  "Sure."

You reached over to grasp the plastic bag with the few ingredients—the small crinkling sound emitting as you put the bag in your lap.

You pulled out the graham crackers as Alex began speaking, his hands fumbling with each other.

"I.. uh.. I should probably come clear about something. I haven't really been able to tell this to anyone else." He rubbed the back of his neck as your hands worked on the sweet treat.

"Go ahead, man." Your eyes flickered to his for a moment before returning to the half-made s'more in your hands.

"I.. I'm sorry for being really irritated lately, I've just been having my own issues, but that shouldn't justify me taking it out on you guys."

You grabbed his hand and put the s'more in it.

"It's okay. I get that completely, man. I don't know what's going on, but I won't push to find out. Just eat my beautiful culinary masterpiece and don't think on it too much." A smile made its way to your face as he looked down at the s'more in his hands.

A small smile formed back on his face as he took a bite of the treat, his glasses lenses reflecting the light of the fire.

Your voice fell silent as Jay finished explaining what had happened at the hotel in the time you'd been gone.

"Are you sure it was the same masked guy?" You questioned, eyes glancing at him.

"Yes, it was the same mask, same jacket—everything." Jay let out a breath. "But, I did find several tapes in the safe."

"Have you watched them yet?"

"No, I was too.. unnerved, I guess, to do it alone." Jay rubbed the back of his neck, dipping his head down slightly.

"Well, now that you're here, in my humble abode, we can watch them." You attempted to lighten the mood, putting your feet up on the coffee table.

"All of the tapes are roughly unordered and some are unlabeled." Jay put his laptop in his lap as he mirrored my position, sitting next to me.

He pulled up a good amount of files on his desktop, clicking on one.

A video of Jay in the driver's seat of his car, driving. It's unknown whether you're in the video or not, him only looking back and forth to the camera and the road.

"All right.. it is Wednesday, April 21st, 2010. Uh.. it is 3:56pm. Right now, I am on my way to the return address here that was on the package that was outside my door a couple days ago"

"I've more or less been driving non-stop since I got the package and watched the tape that was in it." His hands gripped the steering wheel.

"I think I'm getting fairly close to the address, the return address. I'd probably say about 15 to 20 minutes away." The sound of his blinker accompanied the end of his statement. "I have no idea what's gonna be there when I get there.. so."

He sighs as the blinker cuts off. "It's looking a little rainy. And.. I don't know why I'm still talking."

Another tape is presumably Jay walking with the camera faced downwards, his legs and the sidewalk in frame as thunder rumbles. You could hear a sigh in frustration as the camera points to a seemingly abandoned house, graffiti littering the walls.

Jay hesitantly enters the house before pointing the camera everywhere he can, stepping fully in the house. Jay walked around the house hesitantly a little more before the sound of a scraping noise can be heard.

Nothing else of interest is on the tape, simply just Jay looking around the house a little more before leaving.

Jay clicked off the footage as it stopped playing, your hands rubbing your temple. "God.. I think I need to just go to sleep, or something." You let out a sigh.

"Yeah, there wasn't much else I saw that I had already salvaged. I'll get to work on getting the other tapes in the right format to watch."

You nodded at Jay's words as you stood up, a yawn leaving your lips. "Feel free to crash here, I don't really care. I have a bunch of my brother's clothes in the closet to the left if you need anything to sleep in."

"Thank you." An appreciative smile formed on his face as he watched you walk to your room.
