"Only Heather"
-Wild Nothing"

You scanned the disappearing horizon in the fading light. The flat landscape stretches endlessly as vibrant tints of red, orange, and yellow color the swaying summer grass. The rustle of the stalks as you push forward sounds like the shhh, shhh, shhh of the sea rolling to shore, but less fluid and more brittle. Still, the similarity is comforting.

Your arms are stretched to the side, in a T formation as your head dipped to concentrate on your feet. You walked in a straight line in front of you on the rusted train track rail, Brian not far behind you.

"Are you still filming B-roll stuff?" You shouted back to Alex as you and Brian continued to walk along the track out of pure boredom while you waited for the film student.

"I actually just filmed you guys walking together, I think it would be a nice scene. Like the two best friends being best friends, y'know?"

"I could see that." You responded, eyes still dipped to the rail. In Alex's film, you and Tim were basically Brian's character's best friends, which is ironically canonical in real life too.

You felt a hand shove you to the side, your feet stumbling over themselves.

"Brian, you dick!" You laughed, steadying yourself—your eyes making their way to the sunset.

"It's nice out, today." Your words emitted through the woods as you looked back to where Alex was.

Seth appeared from the bushes, another camera in his hands.

"Sorry, I had to grab some stuff." He apologized quietly as he began to talk to Alex directly. The two of you were too far away to hear exactly what they were talking about, though you didn't care.

"When was the last time you think a train came through here?" You let your feet guide you on the rail again, putting one foot in front of the other.

"I dunno. I kinda wanna hitch a ride from a train someday. It's always been on my bucket list." Brian walked in front of you, his back turned towards you.

"I actually have thought about doing that. I'm surprised we haven't yet, honestly. What else is on your bucket list?" Your hair fell into your face as you stumbled, nearly tripping off of the rail.

"I know I wanna take you guys rock climbing one of these days." He mentioned. "It's fun."

"Rock climbing? I'd bust my ass if I tried that." You let out a laugh as you focused on the track.

Brian let out a laugh himself as he got off the track before you both went too far, him turning his attention towards you.

"We should probably head back to Alex and Seth." Your eyes looked over to the two—them holding cameras of their own.

"Alright, I just—it's been eating at me and I really need to show you this tape. You're gonna hate it but I feel like you should know."

Jay's words worried you for sure, his eyes definitely reflecting how upset he is to even mention this tape.

He clicked on the file, the footage beginning with Jay standing in front of the old building we saw in another tape some time ago.

The mere sound of footsteps and slight rustling is the only sounds audible in the abandoned atmosphere as Jay enters the building.

Jay's breathing in the video is heavy, as he mutters out a slightly distressed 'hello?'.

He steps around the rubble for a few more seconds, the sound of his shoes crackling and scattering the glass embedded in the piles of junk.

"What are you wanting me to see? I'm not seeing anything!" Jay's words are filled with slight annoyance as he turns the camera slightly.

Alex's voice calling out Jay's name causes him to whip around towards him, the sound of metal clattering distracting the both of them.

"Alright, hold on." Jay whispered, as he turned around the corner of the wall before the sound of static paired with the masked man running out caused him to stumble back.

The camera dropped to the floor, landing sideways as the sounds of a struggle emitted.

Alex threw the man to the floor, landing on top of him.

"Get the cord!"

The masked man struggled against Alex as Jay reached for the cord across the room.

"Here, take it, take it, take it!"

The audio distorted as Jay picked up the camera, the sounds of the masked man still struggling against Alex audible.

The footage itself lagged heavily, glitches around the frame. It cuts out for a second before it cuts in to Jay taking the mask off of the man.

To your sheer horror, you're met face to screen with one of your childhood best friends, grunts emitting from his mouth as he struggled against Alex.

"Give me the knife!" Alex shouted to Jay, before Jay refuses to give up the weapon.

"No, I am not giving you the knife!"

"Turn off the camera!"

The audio distorts Alex's voice as he moves from Tim's body, gripping onto a cement block across the room.

"Woah, woah, hey! What are you doing?!" Jay shouted to Alex as he threw the block onto Tim's leg, the sound of bone cracking slightly audible.

You covered your mouth with your hand, the footage quickly skipping to Jay driving before it cuts to black—ending.

"What the fuck. Is Tim okay?! When did this happen?" You bombarded Jay with your questions, the image of Tim with that godforsaken mask on haunting you.

"This has got to be a mistake right? Some sick joke?" You placed a hand on your temple, contemplating everything that's happened.

"Look, I don't.. remember any of this so I can't tell you if he's okay or when this happened. I'm sorry." Jay apologized, placing a hand on your shoulder.

"Even if he is that masked bastard, he's.." you paused for a second. "He's still one of my closest friends."

"Maybe it isn't him. Maybe it's like what happened to Alex." Jay suggested.

"I don't know." A sigh left your lips as you rested your back against the couch. "I'm just tired."

"I know you are. So am I."
