"Like Real People Do"

You enter a thick layer of mist, stepping over plenty of sleeping branches and twigs on the humid dirt. There's a pleasant scent, like the gentle whisper of an awaited lover, and your senses are over-powered by the cinematic environment unfolding around you.

It's almost dusk in these woods and all you can muster is a sigh; how is an ordinary place suddenly a dream-like wonder? What is drawing you further into the forest without the worry of possibly losing yourself forever? The trees reach out with a sweet lullaby and suddenly you're dancing through life.

The gentle rain slightly pelting down from the dark blue early morning skies calmed you to your core as his footsteps crunched the leaves and twigs below him. The chirping of the birds high up in the trees acted as music to your very ears.

"It's nice out here this mornin', isn't it?" His eyes met yours as he gripped his umbrella, standing to put it over you.
"I didn't think you'd actually follow me out here." You chuckle, smile staying on your face as your eyes gazed at him.

"I thought I'd join you, y'know?" His gentle southern twang melted your heart as you stood there. Your eyes met the sky—it's dark blue hue signifying the pre-dusk color.

You sat down, staring up at the sky, eyes half closed. Brian didn't ask any questions as he simply got down next to you, setting his umbrella aside. Your back made contact with the damp grass underneath you as you laid down, your best friend mirroring your actions.

Cold waves of thin air roll off your body, the breeze tender on your skin. Droplets of water land on your face with grace, gently slipping in soft, almost invisible rivers of salt and humid. You can feel them, your senses alert of every touch, the caress calming.

"Thank you."

Your expression turned into that of a slightly confused one, your hands fumbling together.

"About what?" You questioned, turning your head towards him. His eyes stared to the sky, his face seemingly reminiscent. "September fourth, 2002."

It took a moment for it to register—Brian reciting the date of the night the two of you first met on the balconies.

"Why were you going to do it?" Your question seeped into Brian, his lips parting slightly as his thoughts churned in his head "I.. my dad was just becoming too much to handle."

You reached over to put your hand on his shoulder—him turning his head to look at you.

"My dad's shitty too, don't worry about it. I'm glad we met when we did, y'know? You were strong enough to get away from him, and look at where you are now."

Brian quietly laughed, his smile reappearing. "Laying in the middle of a wooded field in the morning in the rain?" He sarcastically asked.

"With your best friend." You grinned at him, his smile matching yours. The rain pelted your faces, both of your hair being drenched.

"You're a really fuckin' good friend, y'know that?" Brian's words mixed in with the gentle rain sounds, your smile reappearing.

"You're not so bad yourself, Bri."

The bustling streets in small town Alabama felt normal to you—having not left the state. The savory scent of restaurants serving breakfast filled your nostrils as your feet came in contact with the sidewalk.

The silence between the two of you clearly expressed your mutual feeling of confusion. Your eyes flickered throughout the street, people paying no mind to anyone they deemed as strangers.

Your palms pushed the door, the chattering of people scattered across the restaurant now audible. Your thoughts began to consume you, your eyes nearly glazing over as Jay got you both a table.

Your back hit the back of the chair as you sat down, letting out an exhausted sigh. Your eyes made their way to the male sitting across from you.

"I.. I want to go home."

Your words are quiet, yet you knew he could hear you. Jay inhaled a breath for a few moments before letting it out, eyes flickering anywhere but yours.

"I know. But.. I don't know how safe that would be." His eyes finally met yours, watching as you put together a response.

"I don't even care at this point.. I feel disconnected from reality and I hate it. I need some form of normalcy." The edges of your lips curled into a small frown as your thoughts ran wild.

"I understand that, but.. I don't know. I want you to be safe."

"I'll be fine, Jay. Do what you want, alright? I'm gonna go home, and I'll let you know if anything happens."

Jay sighed, placing a hand on his temple as his expression reflected how he felt—his eyes are tired and stale.

"Alright."
