This book is pretty old already, meaning that the art in the first few chapters honestly looks pretty bad- atleast I think...

The eyes at the top belong to the Frankish Empire, and it's hc's time again baby B)
Basically the short version of it all is that I envision the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire to have split from eachother after the Frankish Empire collapsed. I will not go off on a long rant explaining what the Frankish Empire was, because then I'd also have to talk about the Carolingian Empire, and so much more and it's way to messy so you just gotta live with this.
However, it is very important for you to understand that the HRE neither belongs to the Germanic family nor to the Roman one, it's basically completely it's own thing. Not the states with the HRE, those very much do belong to certain families and are way to independent for anyone's liking considering how much war happened within the HRE alone, but basically France refuses to acknowledge (or rather accept the fact) that the HRE is technically like... I dunno, her brother? Close relative? They were once the same person, and it is hard to place labels when they never had their family talk- And then she murdered him in 1806. Or rather he vanished after Austria gave up on him. Whatever you'd like to believe to be the truth :)
And yes, basically the Holy Roman Empire got fully black eyes, whilst France got the purple irises. So that's something. Like an eternal reminder of what once was.
