Joe curses at himself as he rushes home. He'd let Sam talk him into staying for dinner. She'd looked sad, depressed when he'd finally gotten her to come to the door. But when she'd seen him standing there she seemed to brighten up a little.
Joe had gotten lost in conversation with his one time best friend and it almost felt like old times. So when she asked him to eat dinner with her, he didn't have the heart to say no. Overall it had been a good night and Sam was laughing and smiling by the time they were done with dinner.
Sam had complained about her feet and her back hurting. And how round her belly was now. Joe couldn't help but notice Sam was quite a bit bigger than Amber. But he didn't dare say that out loud.
After dinner Sam took Joe's hand and put it on her belly. He felt his daughter kick and he couldn't help but smile. She kicked his hand over and over again. He laughed each time he felt it. Without even thinking he leaned forward and kissed Sam's belly and whispered "I love you" to his little girl. By the look on Sam's face Joe knew he shouldn't have done that. She was looking down at him like he just told her he loved her.
"Damn it's getting late, I better get home. Thanks for dinner Sam. We'll talk soon okay?"
Sam follows him to the door, "Do you have to leave so soon?"
"Yeah I really do. I need at least one night alone with my wife before we pick up the kid in the morning. We'll talk soon Sam." With that he quickly hugs her and heads home.
Joe checks his phone when he gets in the car. He can't believe he forgot it when went into Sam's. Now he sees Amber tried to call him, twice. He calls her back once he's on his way home. She doesn't answer. He tries again. Still no answer. He drops his phone in the seat beside him and drives a little faster.
Joe's really not looking forward to spending tonight fighting with Amber about Sam. He hopes and prays she'll understand and not be too mad. Because he's got plans and they don't include arguing with his wife.
Joe stops on his way home to buy Amber some of her favorite ice cream and a bouquet of pink and yellow roses. She can never stay mad at him when he brings her some of her favorite things.
Joe walks into their big house with a huge smile on his face, ready to woo his wife.
He calls her name but she doesn't answer him. He pushes their bedroom door open, ice cream and roses in his hands.
His smile fades as he takes in the scene in front of him. His son crying hysterically. His wife laying on the floor. His suitcase laying haphazardly on the floor. And blood. So much blood.
Joe drops the ice cream and the roses and rushes to his wife. His first thought is to make sure she's breathing. She is. He's trying to check her over but Joey keeps reaching for him. Joe pulls out his phone and calls 911. He picks up Joey and hugs him tight before sitting him on the bed. "Son, give Daddy a minute. Let me help Mommy. Okay? Can you be a big boy and sit right here for a minute?" Joey nods his head and tries to stifle his sobs.
"9-1-1 what's your emergency?"
Joe runs his hand through his hair. "It's my wife. She's unconscious on the floor."
"Sir what happened to your wife?"
"I don't know. I just got home and found her on the floor. She's pregnant. There's so much blood. Please send help. She needs help."
The operator asks for his name and address. Joe gives it to her. She asks him a few other questions and tells him help is on the way.
It doesn't take them long to get there. The police arrive right behind them. They want to ask Joe questions. It doesn't take long for him to figure out they are trying to see if he did this to her. It's a nightmare. Joe just wants to be with his wife.
EMS finally speak quietly to the officer talking to Joe and tell him it doesn't look like foul play and they allow Joe to go back in with Amber. She's on a gurney now and they're pushing her down the hall. They tell him where they'll be taking her and Joe says he'll be right behind them.
Joe calls James when he and Joey are on the way to the hospital. In a panicked voice he says he'll be right there. Joe calls Jordan next. Because he knows if something bad has happened to Amber he'd never forgive him for not telling him.
"Joe, slow down, I can't understand you. Did something happen to Joey? Why's he screaming?"
Joe takes a deep breath, "No Joey's fine. It's Amber. I just came home and found her. She...she was on the floor. Unconscious. We're following behind the ambulance now headed to Boston General. Meet me there?"
"I'm on my way."
Joe sits in the ER waiting room. They won't let him go back with Amber with Joey. So he sits and waits. He looks up every time he hears the door open.
Finally James and Susan walk through the doors. They immediately start asking him questions.
"I don't know anything. They won't let me back with Joey. And no one's come out to tell me anything. You guys take Joey and I'll go check on her."
Susan takes a sleeping Joey from Joe and Joe turns to the lady sitting behind the desk. "My wife's parents are here, now can I go see my wife?"
The nurse nods at him, but just as he's sticking his visitor sticker on his shirt a doctor comes out to talk to him. "Mr. McIntyre, your wife is okay. She had a small Placental abruption, which is common in women who've had one in previous pregnancies. She and the baby are both doing fine. She's awake and asking for you."
