"Laurie!!" Marlene shouted as she ran down the girl's dormitory stairs into the Gryffindor common room.

The group of friends were at the small table in front of the sofas, some of them were studying and by some of them, that means Remus and Lily with Laurie chipping in here and there.

"Laurie Devereux, have I got a surprise for you," Marlene said excitedly.

"I don't know Marls, have you?" she answered with an unamused expression.

"Well, I know that you've been a bit down since the whole Danny thing so..." she pulled a baby pink rotary landline telephone from behind her back.

The thought from Marlene was actually very sweet. They had been in school for nearly a week and Laurie was miserable about the fact she couldn't call Danny, given that was the reason he stopped it with her in the first place.

Laurie shrugged her shoulders and shook her head "what?"

"Well, we have been here for nearly a week and all I've heard from your mouth is 'i just wish I could ring him' or 'why can't Hogwarts just have modern technology' and I just thought that even though boys are totally a waste of time you at least deserve to be happy" Marlene rambled.

"Oh, Merlin! Marlene that's so nice but love how do you expect it to work" she asked while pulling on the cord you were supposed to plug into the landline.

"Magic of course!" Marlene said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

They took the phone across the common room to a smaller table. Sirius and James followed the girls.

"What is it exactly?" Sirius asked while poking at the phone a bit.

"It's a telephone, Sirius! God are you totally clueless" Laurie answered smacking his hand away from the dial.

"Um, pureblood here" he raised his hand awkwardly.

"It's weird, muggles put this thing up to their ear and talk to their mate even if they're all the way back in London they'll hear you and you can have a conversation" James explained.

"There's more to it than that but I'm not Alexander Graham Bell," said Laurie.

"Who"

"That's the man who invented this wonderful machine"

"That's amazing," Sirius said dumbfounded.

"Right! Back to the matter at hand. Laurie, I owled your mum and she sent me Danny's number so here" Marlene interrupted and handed a small piece of parchment with a number on it.

Laurie sat down in the chair at the table and smiled up at Marlene.

"Dial the number, girlie," declared James.

"Don't ever say girlie again" demanded Laurie.

"Ring him!!"

Laurie began to dial the number and put the receiver up to her ear.

"It's ringing," she said excitedly.

"Okay privacy people," said Marlene and she pulled James and Sirius over to the couch by the arm.

"Hello?"

"Hi"

"Whos this"

"It's Laurie... From the Beach"

"Oh my God Laurie, I thought you were at school"

"I am. My friend Marlene... Found an old phone and set it up"

"That's great! I thought I wasn't going to hear from you again"

"So did I but that Marlene is a Godsend"

"I missed you. I haven't stopped thinking about you"

Sirius watched her from the couch. He watched how they easily fell into conversation, he was too far away to hear what they were talking about but he saw how she was smiling.

He hated the fact that she was talking to Danny again he didn't know why he felt the way he did about it but he let it go the moment he saw how happy she looked. How her eyes lit up and she laughed and smiled at whatever he was saying.

Whatever Danny was saying not whatever he was saying.

All those feelings from year's ago Sirius felt them rise in his chest and it scared him.
