1st September 1976Laurie Devereux lay awake in her bed. She looked at her bedside table and the clock read 03:02.
"Ugh" she let out almost disgusted by the fact she had to get up at nine in the morning just so she would be on time for the Hogwarts express.
She was going into her sixth year at Hogwarts so it wasn't like she was nervous.
Suddenly she got up out of her bed and began to wander downstairs.
Her house was large and beautiful, it had windows all over with lots of art on the wall and different brightly coloured furniture. Some of the walls were bright pinks or deep greens just for the fun of it and her mother's pottery was scattered everywhere you looked.
She stopped when she reached the door frame to the conservatory and leaned all of her weight on the side, peeking in on her mother.
Her mother, Thalia, was a beautiful woman. She was tall and slender, her brown hair was messy, her face was perfectly symmetrical and every freckle was perfectly placed.
Laurie was almost a carbon copy of her mother with the same fabulous height and frame as well as the long brown hair and brown eyes, but Laurie always thought she lacked all of the carefree that her mother had.
You see Thalia is what people might call a hippie or a whack job depending on your political stance.
Thalia raised Laurie on her own and she did it perfectly too. Laurie had all of the right morals, she was creative, insightful, she was respectful and intelligent she was all of the things good people should be.
Laurie saw her mother as her best friend.
Just as Thalia saw her daughter as hers.
"Mum" Thalia's eyes suddenly snapped up from the piece of clay on the pottery wheel and to her daughter standing in the door frame.
"What's wrong darling?" She implored "Why are you still up?"
"I'm fine, couldn't sleep that's all"
"Now I know that know nothing about magic and all but surely there isn't something to make you go to sleep so you better get your skinny little but back up to that bed," her mother said 'sternly' even though her version of sternly wasn't very that.
"Actually there is, I'm just to young to use it here" Laurie answers matter of factly.
Thalia is muggle and Laurie's father is a pureblood making Laurie a half blood. Also making it very hard for her mother when she was young.
"Well then come on I haven't got all night" Thalia said while scooting back and patting the part of the stool in front of her.
A smile grew and on Laurie's face and she ran over and wedged herself in between the wheel and her mum.
He mother picked her hands in her own and began to glide them through the clay.
"You're not doing it right" Laurie corrected her mother.
Thalia scoffed " I'm not doing it right, are you crazy"
"You're not, look" Laurie pushed and as her mother poked her head further over Laurie's shoulder she grabbed a handful of clay and spread it all over her mother's face.
Thalia screamed, "what was that for?" she asked baffled by what her daughter had done.
Laurie simply shrugged her shoulders and smiled.
So in return, Thalia picked up another piece of clay and threw it at her daughter.
Laurie then pulled a paintbrush that was in a bucket of yellow paint and smeared it across her mother as they both laughed.
The girls spent about fifteen minutes just throwing paints and clay and anything else they could find at each other and by now they were out of breath from chasing each other around the room.
They were covered head to toe in 'art' so Thalia would call it even though it just splattered.
Laurie was laughing at something her mum had said when "wait" Thalia said quickly.
"What?" Laurie said confused at her mother's word.
"Don't move" and she got up from her seat and ran off to find something.
"Why not?" she asked back but never moved her position.
She came back with a camera in her hand "you just look so beautiful my girl" she said with full admiration of the woman her daughter was becoming.
"Oh mum enough with the sappy" she sounded as if she was faking embarrassment but still never moved from her position.
Thalia snapped the photo of Laurie "perfect" she whispers to herself.
"Right well you should go up and hop in the shower and go to bed, I'll take it James and Mia will take you to the station tomorrow" Thalia said.
James was Laurie friend who lived next door and Mia was his mother. They helped Thalia a lot when Laurie got her letter, Mia knew she was a witch when she was five and was seen levitating a pot in the garden.
"They do every year"
"Goodnight Laur, love you"
"Goodnight mum, I love you too"

A/N
First chapter, what do you think?I wanted this to be the first chapter so readers could get a good look into how Laurie was raised so you also get a peek into her personality. I want to pay a lot more attention to detail in this story, in the last one I skipped over a lot and I don't want to do that this time.
I also want her mother-daughter relationship to be a thing because its something I wish I had since my own mother passed away so you'll be seeing a lot more of that too.
I really hope you enjoyed (there won't be this much A/N on other chapters just a first chapter special)
