31st October 1976Gryffindor common room was much more lively than the Great hall.
People were drinking and dancing to loud music, they were snogging and joking around with their friends.
There were no teachers around to monitor everything that was going on.
James Potter and Lily Evans could be seen sitting on the couch, arms wrapped around each other.
Earlier that night when Lily asked the boy out for air, she kissed him in the courtyard. Lily kissed James. When they came back to the great hall James informed everyone of what had happened. Nobody believed him, of course. It seemed preposterous to believe that Lily kissed him first and not the other way round.
"It's true madness that she ever kissed you, potter," Marlene said to the couple.
"You don't need to tell me that Mckinnon" James joked.
"So are you an actual couple now?" inquired Laurie.
James looked down at Lily and before he could say anything the redheaded girl said "I suppose so"
James smiled at the girl and pecked her on the lips.
"Oh, Merlin!" the other two girls squealed in excitement then broke into laughter.
Sirius gazed at Laurie from his place at the drink table. She was on the couch laughing with Marlene. He noticed how she was really laughing not like when someone said something funny and she would simply giggle or smile, but now she was truly laughing with her smile wide and hand over her stomach. Sirius would give anything to make her laugh like that.
When he had seen her in her costume his jaw dropped, she looked like something out of a muggle movie in the half sheer dress. Cher. He thought that she fit Laurie quite nicely.
He just smiled to himself.
After a minute she had calmed down and her eyes went wandering around the room. Then her eyes met his.
Coal meeting diamond.
They held it for only a few seconds but it had felt much longer, it felt like nothing else in the world mattered. Laurie smiled at Sirius and he smiled back.
Sirius nodded his head and she looked to see that he was nodding towards the entrance. She looked at him again and mouth 'okay' she said something to Marlene then got up and strode over to the door.
He met her at the door and they began to wander the halls.
"I didn't see you in the great hall," she told him.
"Looking for me, were you? He joked and nudged her with his elbow.
"Not looking, glancing" Laurie enlightened.
"Ahh. Well I wasn't there. I wanted to catch up with you though"
"Why weren't you there?"
"I just can't stand the idea of going to a party and not being allowed to drink or do anything without ole Dumbles watching" he laughed.
"I suppose but it wasn't that bad really" Laurie smiled.
"I like your costume, Cher right?" he complimented.
"Thank you, yes. You know that you're the first pureblood that knew who I was"
"What about James?"
"James doesn't count, that boy is practically a muggle"
"He got the girl though," Sirius said proudly.
"He did. I'm happy for them, Lily says they are a couple" she informed.
"Surprised he didn't explode"
"He looked like he was going to. What about you?" she asked.
"What about me?" he said while pulling cigarettes out of his pocket and offering one to her.
"Don't you have a girl that you want to 'get'?" Laurie accepted the smoke and lit it with the lighter.
Sirius thought about it for a minute, he debated hinting to her about his feelings. He wondered if she would get envious that he liked a girl.
"Sure" he shrugged.
"Really? Who?" she was a bit taken back by her sudden interest in who Sirius liked.
"Just this girl"
"Tell me about her"
He chuckled "she's uh... She's smart, really smart, she's the coolest person I know by far, her jokes are actually funny, she's elegant but still has a laugh you know, she's nice like a genuinely nice, good soul that wants to be good and she's so beautiful the kind of beautiful that makes you take a step back because you're so shocked that someone can even look like that. You know?"
Maybe it was the fire whiskey in his system that made him ramble on about the girl. Maybe it made him forget who he was talking to.
"She sounds wonderful," said Laurie even though she had a twisting feeling in her stomach, she wanted the raven-haired boy to be happy.
"She is so much more than that" he shook his head.
"Sounds like love to me"
"I don't know about love"
"Neither do I" she whispered then laughed "you should tell that girl, I think she would be very lucky to have you"
"Than-" Sirius was cut off.
"Shh" Laurie hushed "did you hear that?" she whispered.
As they walked past a broom closet they heard the sound of something dropping.
Sirius smiled and walked towards the door "stay there"
"Sirius, don't" she whisper shouted.
He did regardless and when the door swung open he was met with one of his best friends. Remus Lupin. Along with a ginger-haired boy named Gideon Prewett.
"Merlin!" Sirius shouted in shock.
"Sirius!" Laurie and Remus said at the same time.
"Alright" Gideon smirked.
"What are you doing?"
"Sirius, please don't be upset with me I know-" he was cut off when Sirius clamped him in a tight hug.
"It's okay, I just can't believe that two of my friends are into gingers"
"Sirius!" said Laurie.
"What?"
"We don't want to tell anyone just yet, we'll tell our friends but that's it for now. Okay?"
"Yeah," Sirius and Laurie said.
"But Prewett, just know that if you hurt Remus in any way, I'll bury you myself"
"I'll keep that in mind" Gideon joked.
"Do you lot want to go back to the common room?" remus asked.
"Yeah"
"Alright"
"Sure"
