The school halls were particularly quiet at this time. It was lunchtime so everyone had made their way to the great hall. Everyone except Laurie who was strolling down the halls, taking her sweet time getting to her friends.

"Laurie!" a voice shouted and Laurie jumped slightly startled by the noise of someone else when she had been alone in the corridor.

She spun around on her heels to be met with the face of a long time friend of hers.

"Evan Rosier" she greeted with a smile and began to walk again. Keeping her previous pace.

Evan was much taller than her, he had straight dark brown hair that was perfectly cut to his head and he had deep green eyes. Some might say that he and Laurie had an unexplainable resemblance.

Evan walked alongside her, matching her stride.

"Is that any way to greet your best friend?" he quipped. He leaned down to hug her and she laughed but hugged him back.

"You're not my best friend" she laughed.

"Ouch"

They began to walk towards the great hall again.

"How was your summer then, Little Devereux?" the brown-haired boy asked.

"Quiet well" she answered, "and yours?"

"Same old same old, come on tell me about all of the fun things your mother brings you to do, it's my favourite part of coming back to school" he nudged her arm.

"What's your favourite part of coming back to school?"

"You telling me about all the stuff you do, you know I don't get to anything except go to fancy pure blood balls and parties"

Laurie looked up at him and smiled "My mum brought me on a boat. Evan, it was amazing we swam in the sea and mum even showed me how to drive a muggle car"

Laurie told him all about her summer and he told her all about his.

They had met in their first year, up at the sorting hat right before either had been sorted. They began to talk in classes and go to the library together.

It was an unlikely friendship. She was a half-blood Gryffindor and he was a pureblood Slytherin.

But for some reason, both of them felt connected though for now, they had no idea how connected they truly were.

After lunch Marlene, Lily and Laurie were making their way back to the common room.

When they got there, all three of them sat down on the couches.

Lily and Marlene, we're having a conversation. Laurie however, was completely zoned out.

All-day she had been thinking about the one thing or should I say one person that had plagued her mind for years.

Her father.

She had never met him and for so long she had convinced herself that she never wanted to. But every now and then he would pop into her head and stay there for a while.

Laurie didn't know what he looked like or sounded like, she didn't even know his name. All that she knew was he was a pure-blood wizard that dropped the responsibility of being her father as soon as it became a problem for him.

His own family had threatened to disown him if he did not leave her and her mother.

Laurie tried to understand. She tried over and over again but always came out with the conclusion that he was an evil soul that cared more about his family's ideas than the happiness of his own child.

But now she had decided she at least wanted to know who he was or if he had another family.

So she got up off the couch and ran up the stairs to her dorm.

"Where are you going!?" Marlene shouted but was met with no response.

When she was in her dorm Laurie grabbed a piece of parchment paper and a quill and began to write.

Dear Mum,

I know that this letter might seem unexpected but I've been thinking about it a lot lately.

Before you say no I just want to remind you that I'm sixteen and I believe that I can make that decision for myself. I think that I deserve to know and I'm not saying that I want to get to know him or anything. I just want a name.

Who is my father?

- your beloved daughter.

She walked to the school's owlery with the letter firmly in her hand.

She debated for a moment on whether to send it or not but finally, she gave the letter to her owl ollie.

"You know where to go" she whispered to the brown owl and he flew off.

***

After three days of agony. Her owl swooped down at the Gryffindor table with a letter.

She gave ollie a bit of her breakfast and he flew off.

Laurie quickly opened the letter to read.

Dear Laurie,

I understand that you want to know about your father and I must say that this is a day I have been most dreading since he left.

I want you to know about him. But I want to do that with you in person so with that I promise you I will tell you about him when you get home for Christmas.

I miss you, my love

-mum

Laurie sighed and dropped her head down so it hit the wood of the table.

"What's wrong?" Sirius asked.

She said nothing and just threw the paper at him.

"Ohh," he said as he read the letter. He placed a comforting hand over hers and she looked up and smile at him.

"What is it?" James asked.

Laurie gave him and the rest of the friend group to read.

"Christmas isn't too long away Laur it'll pass as if it felt like a week," Marlene said with a sad smile.

"Yeah I suppose"
