Kristoni Barnes
June 5th, 9:37 AMI squinted my eyes at the light seeping into the room and it was way to bright for my liking. I scrunched my face up at how dry my throat was, and moved my hand around the table next to me looking for anything to soothe it.
I started knocking things over and heard moving to the left of me. I slightly looked over and noticed Dave & my Aunt who was sleeping in the recliner chair.
"Hold on mama," he said while getting up and placing the cup of water up to my lips.
I sighed relief as the cool liquid soothed my dry throat, as I was finally able to speak properly.
"Thank you," I said as I looked at Dave, noticing the look on his face. His eyes were red & there were no signs that he had gotten any sleep. He looked exhausted.
I tried to sit up in the bed, but immediately stopped from the pain in my stomach causing me to yelp.
"Be careful Kris."
By that time, my aunt had woken up due to all of the sudden noise in the room.
"Oh Kristoni baby, you're finally awake," she said before getting up from her seat and coming over to me placing a kiss on my forehead.
"Yeah," I mumbled and then there was a deathly silence between all of us.
I looked down towards my stomach and noticed that there was still a pudge there, but it was obviously smaller than it previously was.
I removed my blankets from my body and pulled the hospital gown I had on down, so I could see my stomach. There were stitches along the bottom of my stomach, and I began to get a weird feeling in my stomach.
When I gave birth to Charli I didn't have a c-section, but I knew a c-section scar when I saw one.
I looked up at my Aunt and Dave, as they stared back at me with an unreadable look on their faces.
"They got her out? Where is she? I want to see her." I began to ramble off questions. "I obviously had to have an emergency c-section or something right?"
Neither one of them said anything at all & my heart began to race.
"Where is my baby?!" I frantically asked, as I felt my heart begin to drop.
My aunt turned away from me, as I just watched Dave keep his head down. The tears began to gather at the bottom of his eyelids. From the look on his face, I just wanted him to tell me the opposite from what I was thinking. But for some reason, I just knew it would be true.
"Where is she?" I asked barely above a whisper. I could hear my aunt sniffling in the far corner of the room.
"She didn't make it Kris. There was nothing that they could do by the time we got here, it was too late. Baby, you almost didn't make it out of there either, we lucky to even have you right now." He said as I watched a tear fall from his eye.
I felt the tears began to cloud my vision, before letting out a heart-wrenching cry that I couldn't hold back. The amount of pain that I was feeling was unbearable, something that I would never wish on my worst enemy.
And I knew exactly who inflicted this pain on me.
I felt Dave pull me into his arms, as my tears continuously soaked into his shirt. "Why me? Why us?" I screamed out into his chest. "She was innocent, she had nothing to do with anything. And now we will never have the chance to be with her."
