THEY DECIDE TO HEAD BACK TO NEW YORK THE SAME DAY. Apparently, during Nina's much-needed four-hour nap in the comfort of her king-sized bed after taking a long, relaxing bath, a lot has happened.
Now, Nina is not heartless. Despite being a pathological liar who thinks she's so above everyone around her, the girl couldn't help but feel a soft pang in her heart when she gets a video call from Liz; whose voice was shaking, hands trembling as tears ran down her beautifully sculpted face. At the time, she had just woken up from her nap, so it took a few seconds of her blinking dumbly at her best friend for the events of the last few hours to resurface in her brain, and once they did, she actually started to pay attention to what Liz was trying to tell her.
They were in a hospital, as it seemed - to give everyone medical checkups after the incident at the Washington Monument. With a furrowed brow, Nina questioned what exactly happened at the monument to have her normally calm and collected friend in a mess; and that's when Liz explained everything.
It was hard to understand everything since Liz was a blubbering mess, but Nina got the gist of the story; them vising the Washington Monument after winning the competition, something exploding, the elevator they were riding on malfunctioning, Spider-Man (Nina resisted the urge to roll her eyes because it was not the time) coming in to save them, Liz almost falling to her death if it weren't for the masked boy; it was a huge mess.
Then when Liz had calmed down she had started pestering her questions. The older teenager kept on reprimanding her, asking her why she had gone M.I.A at the decathlon, Nina explained yet again that she got hit by a car after going for a late-night walk out in the streets (it wasn't a great lie, but Parker took over her mind and because of that her lying wasn't really on point). Then when Liz got worried for her, she explained that she had just been discharged a few hours prior and was now resting in the hotel room.
"Wait, so you weren't with Peter?" Liz questioned once she was done explaining, now a lot less shaky than she had initially been.
"Why would I be with Parker?" Nina shot back, a bit too venomously, but she couldn't help it. Peter Parker - the boy who had the audacity to call her a bitch after putting her into so much trouble. Peter Parker - his annoying little smile and his high-pitched voice; even just thinking about him makes her want to slam her head against the headboard in frustration.
"Well, you both were gone. At the same time. So we kinda just assumed..."
"Peter is gone too?" Nina feigns curiosity, pretending that she hadn't spent those hours with him in the bunker.
"He said he's back at the hotel. We're coming back there to pick up our stuff then we're going straight home."
And Liz meant it. Now, here they were, sitting silently in the bus as Do I Wanna Know? by the Arctic Monkeys played softly on the speaker. The moon was already up in the sky at this point, yet Nina couldn't help but feel that sense of dread that engulfed her stomach; like it was trying to tell her that something bad was about to happen.
