NINA HAD FORGOTTEN TO PUT HER RING ON THAT MORNING.
Now, if she was set to patrol that day, she would've freaked out over forgetting something so significant to her recent successes, but it was a normal day - no patrolling since Alaska was going through an artsy indie kid phase at the moment, and when a class trip to The Museum of Modern Art presented itself, she had forced the two girls to come with her.
So that eased her thoughts a bit. It was just a normal field-trip and she would be spending it in a stinky, grimy bus with her two closest friends; just a normal day. No ring needed.
Besides, it wasn't even her fault she forgot to wear the ring that morning. During the past three days when it was officially announced that Mendax was now an Avenger, she had been signing a lot of documents, has exposed her identities to a lot of government officials, trained herself with her nanotech suit since apparently flying was a very hard task and Tony made it look way too easy, and had her alias being dragged into the mud by tabloids and J. Jonah Jameson; telling the whole world that she was unworthy of being an Avenger.
On top of that, she had to play the role of a sad but no too sad ex-girlfriend and juggle high-school during the day plus her extracurriculars that she was seriously considering to drop especially after Tony told her she'd get in into NYU or Columbia no matter what, patrol New York for two hours at night, so sue her if she hasn't been getting any sleep at all which caused this whole demise.
Not only did she forget her ring, but she forgot countless things as well - makeup, (not like she needed it but still) breakfast, (which was why she was still sort of cranky) and, the most important part, her sunscreen - because god forbid that she'd age horribly.
And as if her morning couldn't be any more worse, it did. As they stood by the side of the bus waited for Mr. Harrington to finish his headcount, Alaska decided that today would be a wonderful day to be a menace and talk with Flash Thompson right in front of Nina and Betty despite knowing that the boy annoyed the two girls to the end of the Earth.
"Did you guys see the news about Mendax becoming an official Avenger?" Betty asks all of the sudden. Nina knows that the girl actually has a lot of information on that event, so she also knows that the conversation shift would catch Flash's attention and stop him from flirting with Alaska.
From the corner of her eyes, she sees Peter Parker lingering with his two friends, Michelle and Ned. It's been three days since she last seen him - that being her stomach almost exploding with weird tingly feelings when she heard Peter defend her right after being a dick.
She catches his eye for a millisecond, before she redirects her gaze back on Flash, who's eyes lit up at the mention of the superhero.
"Of course, Blonde. Do you live under a rock? Everyone's been talking about her." Eyes wandering for a moment, he turns around and calls Peter and his friends over. "Parker, you and Spider-Man are best friends, right? Can you hook me up with Mendax?"
