After that incident with Annabeth, which was several weeks before, I got called to the Big House. Of course, I wondered why.
I saw Chiron, Rachel the Oracle and Lidia and Kalen.
"Astra, you're going to go on a quest with Lidia and Kalen. Rachel has just issued a prophecy, and it calls for three demigods to go to the west and defeat a monster of terror, who guards a great secret."
Kalen nodded. "We think it may be Ladon. And the great secret, is the apples."
"Then, let's go!" I grinned at Kalen and Lidia.
We were told to bring our weapons and Nyssa; one of the Hephaestus campers, brought us some armor that could change into normal clothes.
"Percy fought the dragon once, and he survived." She left and wished us luck.
We left after a good night of sleep. Soon enough, we reached the Garden of the Hesperides.
Three girls, probably the Hesperides, appeared in front of us, with dark eyes, caramel-ish skin and smooth black hair. They wore the classic white Greek chiton. The three girls narrowed their eyes at me and Lidia, but then they gave a sweet smile to Kalen. What was happening?
"You two must die, but this one can stay." one of the Hesperides said, glancing at Kalen.
"Hey!" Me and Lidia both protested. Why is it always the boys that get let off?
They started to speak in a voice that made my head dizzy. All of my thoughts cleared out of me head. For some reason, I felt obliged to listen to what they were saying. They wanted me and Lidia to.. dance?
Kalen was yelling and then suddenly, he brandished his spear. I knew something was off, so I tried to block their voices out of my mind. It worked, and I wasn't under their spell anymore!
I unsheathed my sword and pointed it at them. Lidia also took out her axe and waved it at them menacingly.
Somehow, it scared them enough to disappear right on the spot.
Then, a loud roar echoed behind us. All three of us spun around and saw what we were looking for: Ladon.
His hundred heads seemed to all be staring right at me, and his scales shined like copper.
But, he STANK. I still can't describe it without wanting to throw up at least a little.
We all charged at Ladon. It was a pretty stupid idea, but at least it caught him off guard for a short while. Eventually, he came to his senses and started retaliating.
After about 10 minutes, we were all tired and Ladon was also tired out. I could have had taken that opportunity to kill him and get the whole thing over with, but I had a soft heart. I just couldn't bring myself to hurt him. Besides, he was lying down peacefully and I almost wanted to pet him (which would have been a REALLY, REALLY REALLY bad idea).
Instead, I reached over him and picked an apple off the tree VERY CAREFULLY. Our trio got out of there so fast we could have won a Formula 1 race!
After we reached Camp Half-Blood, we gave Chiron and some of the Demeter children the apple to study and take care of.
And that, is how my first quest ended.
