The trip back to Mystic Falls is silent. Elenor had driven separately from her brothers so it was just the two of us in the car. I was too busy thinking of all the things I wanted to say and trying to determine which one to speak. I didn't know why she wasn't speaking but I got the sense that she wouldn't be the one to disturb the peace, so I did. "How did you know Elijah?" I finally ask and she sighs as if that were the one question she was hoping I wouldn't land on.

"I met him in Europe a long time ago," she says. The answer is dismissive and I realize that this is one of my battles, the ones I usually give to Ellie out of fear of losing her, but something within me just can't let this go.

"You're hiding something, Ellie." The blonde is silent and I clench my jaw before speaking. "Will it help if I tell you he's not dead?" Before I can process anything, Ellie slams on the breaks before turning to me. I briefly have time to thank the fact that we're on an abandoned back road when she speaks.

"What do you mean? How do you know?"

"Besides the fact that he's one of the first vampires that likely wouldn't have lived this long if he could be killed by a simple wooden coat rack? His aura was still alive. If he were dead, or even going to die, it would've been black, like the dead guy."

"What dead guy?"

"Rose's friend." She frowns for a moment before responding.

"What do you mean auras?" I huff. I had decided that the faint glows I've started seeing must be auras so I explain to El about what had happened and she stares at me for a moment before she starts driving. At first, I think she's just done talking, but then, she breaks her silence. "We met in 1919. I was touring in Paris after a nasty fight with Stefan that ended with him turning his back on me and his humanity off. That was when I knew our relationship was irreparable."

"Did you turn it off?" She shakes her head.

"I wanted to when I first turned. Watching my twin become a monster that he couldn't control, Damon abandoning us, believing Kat was dead. It was all heightened and I wasn't sure what to do. So I asked myself what my father would do and resigned myself to doing the opposite. I never killed if I could help it and I refused to turn off my humanity. I thought that was why Elijah liked me at first, because of my restraint, but then I learned the truth. He said I reminded him of someone."

"Who?"

"His precious Katerina. Then he told me the story of her. I didn't have it in me to tell him that she was dead so when I learned he was leading someone from his brother, I offered to cloak him, make whoever it was think they had disappeared or died. He agreed and asked me to find his siblings. I tried but I wasn't good at magic. I just never cared to learn until recently. All I knew was that a witch stronger than me had cloaked them so I wished him luck on finding his brother and left."

I give her a sympathetic smile when I watch her past my street. "Umm Ellie, where are we going?" She groans before fixing me with a glare.

"You were right, Katherine knows something. She warned me that whoever was after her wanted her because she was a doppelgänger before saying that when he comes I should take you and run because he'd try to use us both. So we're going to grab Katherine from the stupid tomb along with that stupid moonstone and go back to Elijah."

"You think it's his brother hunting Katherine," I realize and she mutters a curse.

"I always forget that you're smarter than Elena," she grumbles. "I want to make a deal with Elijah."

"We'll have to bargain for Kat's freedom. She'll never help us without it," I tell her smugly and she snorts.

"You're enjoying this way too much and it's really making me hate you."
