Niklaus' P.O.V.

Belladonna had once told me that I would always have to face the consequences of my actions. That's not an exact recounting of what she said, but it's close enough that those words have been running through my head ever since I sent the little wolf on her way to New Orleans to find her family. I knew that Belladonna was hurt and I once again hated myself for being the one to make her feel that way, but I never thought that she would leave. Everything started when her brother died. Her sister spiraled and I knew that Bella might follow after and I couldn't bear the thought of losing her. I know that it's selfish and I'm a wanker for putting my needs and worries over hers, especially after she was there for me when Finn was killed, but I couldn't help it. When you spend a thousand years prioritizing yourself, it becomes an impossible habit to break. Then Hayley had called.

She was a bold little thing, that Hayley. She was lucky that I had spared her life after she helped to unsire all my hybrids, but I had and then she had the nerve to call and claim that I owed her and she was being pursued. I almost hung up the phone until she revealed that she had been the one to send Katherine to the island. So, despite my dislike for the wolf and my worry about Bella leaving me, I went to save the poor wolf to gather Katerina's whereabouts. For the first time in 500 years, I would be pursuing her for a goal that wasn't purely my own.

I had to admit that I was shocked. Much like Elijah, I had a vivid memory of the Katerina from 1492. I hadn't fallen for her as he had, she had been nothing more than a way to pass the time and I knew that she was passing it with both my brother and Trevor as well, but it made no difference to me. She had one purpose, the sex was just an added bonus. Yet, I do remember in the times where I had to pretend to woo her to convince her to stay at the castle how she would talk of her family.

She had spoken of her sisters with such tenderness that one never would've guessed that they stood aside as her father ripped her baby from her arms and then stood aside once more to allow their parents to banish a seventeen-year-old girl to an unknown country. It was that talk that gave me the idea to kill her family after she had turned. I wanted her to suffer the way I was and that was the closest thing I could get to stealing a piece of herself away.

Yet, it was also that talk that made me so surprised to learn that she had aided in the death of Jeremy Gilbert. Belladonna hadn't always gotten along with her siblings and she and Jeremy had gotten into a nasty fight before he left but even I knew that she would never be able to bear his death and I locked my siblings in coffins for centuries. Katerina, however, knew the pain of losing one's family and she hadn't subjected an enemy or even some random person off the street to that pain. No, she had subjected her best friend. The woman who was like a sister to her. I just didn't understand.

Although, I didn't have much time to understand. With Silas on the loose, I had witnessed Caroline Forbes kill twelve witches, giving him exactly what he wanted, and then been subjected to his mental torture. Eventually, Ellie had come and accidentally siphoned me, the pain breaking me from his spell. After that, I was willing to give Silas what he wanted, but of course, my siblings had to get in the way.

I knew that Rebekah wouldn't be able to pass and she hadn't. She had given her blood to April Young at the behest of the blond quarterback and attempted to plead her case to Elijah. This had not worked either and I was satisfied to learn that I would receive the cure up until Elijah went to deliver his end and discovered it missing. He had claimed that it was on his person the whole day and I knew exactly what had happened.

While Silas could get into our minds, only Bella could do it without us knowing. I had tried to get ahold of her, perhaps convince her to take pity on me, even if I didn't deserve it but, of course, she wouldn't take my calls. My next call had been to Ellie who informed me that Elena had finally been handled after trying to kill Bonnie Bennett. I didn't care about the witch or the doppelgänger and told her as much before requesting she bring Bella by.
