"Vi, you're back!" I called out, relief washing over me as she appeared at the top of the stairs and descended into the room.

"Vi, where have you been?" Mylo pressed, his voice spoke with curiosity and concern.

Claggor glanced up from where he was sitting, adding, "Rumor is the Lanes are gonna fight."

Vi didn't answer any of us. Her expression was distant, her focus set on something different. She walked past us, heading straight toward Powder, who was sitting on the edge of the bed, experimenting with her latest creations.

"Look, I made them for the Enforcers!" Powder exclaimed, her eyes lighting up with excitement as she showed Vi her work.

She held out a small collection of gadgets, her voice filled with pride. "These are smoke bombs," she explained, pointing to one. "And those two are full of nails."

Vi took the devices, examining them briefly before setting them down on the bed beside Powder. She chuckled softly, the sound almost bittersweet. "They're going to work this time, I know it," Powder said eagerly, her face glowing with determination.

Vi leaned in closer, gently tucking Powder's blue hair behind her ear. "Me too," she said softly. She paused for a moment, her voice carrying a weight Powder might not fully grasp. "You know, Powder, what makes you different makes you strong. Always remember that, okay?"

Powder nodded enthusiastically, her smile wide and innocent. Vi smiled back, but it didn't last, it was like a shadow passing over her face.

Without another word, Vi stood up from the bed, her steps slow and deliberate as she made her way toward the wooden stairs.

She didn't say anything to us. Not to Mylo, Claggor, or me.

As the door creaked open and then clicked shut behind her, an uneasy silence settled in the room.

"Where is she going?" Mylo finally asked, breaking the quiet.

"She wouldn't leave us," I murmured, more to myself than anyone else. "Would she?"

But deep down, something about her silence, about the way she looked at Powder, made my heart sink. Something was different this time.

I smashed the glass, making the glass scatter all over the floor. I unlocked the door, and shut it making my way on the other side, sitting down. I was waiting for the Enforcers to take me away. I have too. It was the only option. I won't let Powder live down here like she didn't matter. I need to keep them safe, keep all of them safe. Vander doesn't know, or at least I think he doesn't. But at this rate, I don't care, I need them to be alright.
