violets pov
We quietly went through the open window and jumped down trying not to make a sound. We quietly made our way across and there he was. My eyes widened, he was locked onto a chair, like someone who's done something terribly bad. He shouldn't be there, it should've been me.
I motioned for the others to follow me, signaling for everyone to stay low as we carefully navigated through the dark, cold room. We had to be quick, every step calculated and quiet, so as not to draw attention.
The sight of Vander was heartbreaking. He was barely conscious, covered in bruises and blood. His right eye was swollen shut, dark purples and blues mixing with the raw, angry redness of the skin around it. His breath was shallow, and he was leaning against the back of the chair, barely able to lift his head. His condition was far worse than I had imagined. I couldn't help but feel guit.
This was the cost of trying to protect us.
He coughed, spitting blood onto the floor before looking up at us through swollen eyes. When he saw me, his voice was rough, weak. "Vi..." he managed to grunt, his voice breaking as he tried to focus on me.
I wasted no time. I rushed to his side and hugged him, my arms wrapping around his body, the familiar scent of him grounding me in this chaotic moment. I pulled away, trying to keep my composure. "We're breaking you out," I said with a forced smile, trying to remain calm, to keep the panic from overwhelming us. The others were watching, and I could see the fear in their eyes.
"Mylo," I looked to him, needing him here.
He nodded, already on it. He moved quickly, pulling out a set of lockpicks and starting to work on the restraints that held Vander in place.
Vander let out a weak breath, trying to push himself up, but his injuries were too much. "How... how did you get in?" His voice was barely a whisper, strained and exhausted.
"It wasn't hard. We found an open window and—"
Before I could finish, the realization hit. My blood ran cold. Vander's eyes widened in understanding as he began to panic.
"Oh God..." he murmured, his voice frantic now. "You have to get out. Now."
Before we could respond, a voice rang out, cold and clear.
"Welcome."
We all froze, turning in the direction of the voice. Footsteps echoed ominously as they grew louder, approaching us. A chill ran down my spine, and I felt the weight of the situation sink in. We were surrounded.
"You have my congratulations," the voice continued, as a figure emerged from the shadows. He stepped into view, followed by a group of about twelve armed guards. Each one held a weapon in hand, their stances rigid and threatening. "But I'm afraid this will be a very short reunion."
