The door jolted open, and I felt the chill of the cold metal beneath my feet reverberate up through my bones. The tension in the air was thick, palpable, as we stepped off and approached the large desk. The man behind it was as imposing as his voice—a giant of a figure who stood with a smug smile plastered across his face. His eyes narrowed, taking in Jinx and Sevika, before his lips curled into an exaggerated grin.

"Well, well, big mama," he said, his voice rough and mocking. He leaned foward, eyes flicking over us like we were nothing but playthings. We stopped at the front of his desk, all three of us tense, ready for whatever would come next.

"How'd you take her in?" He asked, glancing at Jinx but referring to Sevika. Sevika said nothing, her face betraying nothing, as Jinx casually nudged her with her elbow.

"I gave her a choice between this, and a swim in the harbor," Jinx said, her tone light and playful, as if she wasn't standing in front of a man who had the power to control their fate.

The man snorted, clearly amused. His eyes shifted to me, still unamused by my silence.

"I gave this one a chance between...well, she didn't have a choice, just look at her," Jinx continued, her voice tinged with mockery as she nudged me forward. I knew she had the smallest smirk on her face as she glanced down at me, her eyes for sure gleaming. I held his gaze briefly, trying to ignore the growing pit in my stomach, before glancing away.

We stood in silence, all of us waiting for him to speak, but the seconds dragged on. The atmosphere was suffocating, full of tension and anticipation, until the man finally broke the silence with a burst of laughter. His booming laugh filled the room, cutting through the stillness like a knife.

I felt my shoulders tense in irritation, but there was nothing to be done. Sevika's unreadable expression said it all—she wasn't interested in playing this game.

The man stamped the paper in front of him, his eyes scanning it carefully to ensure everything was in order. His eyes briefly met mine before he glanced to the side, where the soft sound of heavy footsteps echoed.

The door opened with a screeching groan, and there, stepping into the room with an air of undeniable authority, was Ambessa. The woman moved like a shadow, her heavy metal footsteps reverberating through the air. For a moment, everything seemed to freeze, and I couldn't help but glance toward her.

I caught her gaze for a fleeting moment—she tilted her head just slightly in our direction. My breath caught in my chest, and I quickly looked away, not wanting to draw any attention. I didn't know what to expect from her. Jinx's grip tightened on her weapon as if sensing the same.

The man gave her a brief nod, a sign of respect—or perhaps a formality between them—but nothing more was said. Ambessa's presence seemed to demand silence, a quiet authority that made even the loudest voices hush.
