The cold, damp ground beneath us took what little energy I had left. Our hands were tied tightly behind our backs, and rough fabric covered our faces, plunging us into a suffocating darkness. The quiet was broken only by the sound of Caitlyn grunting, her determination to free herself unwavering despite the many failed attempts.
"I knew it was a mistake trusting you two," Caitlyn snapped, her frustration cutting through the tense silence.
"You've been a real picnic yourself," Vi shot back, her tone sharp and dripping with sarcasm. I could almost see her rolling her eyes, her irritation evident in every word.
"I'm not the one who walked us into not one, but two of Silco's traps!" Caitlyn countered, her voice rising in exasperation.
"Suck it up, princess," I interjected, my own patience wearing thin. "I hope you told your lovely parents how you want your funeral planned, because that's exactly the direction we're heading."
Caitlyn's struggles didn't falter, but neither did they yield results. The bonds around us held firm, and I could only hear her sharp breaths, accompanied by the faint scrape of her boots against the floor.
"This isn't Silco," Vi said suddenly, her voice calm but laced with certainty.
"How do you know?" Caitlyn asked, a mix of skepticism and hope in her tone.
"Because we'd already be dead," Vi replied bluntly, her voice carrying a grim weight that settled heavily over us.
"Oh, very nice!" Caitlyn snapped back, clearly unimpressed. She hesitated, but her voice quickly turned accusing. "When exactly were you planning to tell me that your lunatic sister works for him?"
"Just as soon as you came clean about what the hell you're really doing down here," Vi retorted, her voice edged with suspicion.
"I told you the truth!" Caitlyn yelled, her indignation echoing in the confined space.
"Bullshit," Vi countered flatly. "What was that glowing stone?"
For a moment, there was silence. Even Caitlyn's struggles ceased as if she were weighing her response. Then, a sigh escaped her lips, low and resigned.
"That's what I thought," Vi muttered, her voice cold. The unspoken tension between them settled like a heavy fog, leaving me to wonder how long we could endure the strain of mistrust and if any of us would make it out alive.
The harsh sound of metal clanking echoed through the room as light pierced the suffocating darkness. "What's going on?" Caitlyn's voice cut through the confusion. "Hey, get your hands off me!" she shouted, followed quickly by Vi's more aggressive tone.
"Get the fuck off me!" I yelled as someone grabbed hold of me roughly.
"Leave them alone!" Caitlyn's voice rang out again, defiant but distant as the door slammed shut behind us.
