"I clearly had the right call about not trusting you!" I shouted, pacing back and forth, my anger rising with every step. My boots scuffed against the wooden floor, each sound like a hammer driving the point home. "Since you still can't trust them enough not to shove them in a box!"
"Trust?" Caitlyn shot back, her tone sharp and biting. She stood with her arms crossed, her composure barely masking her own frustration. "You think I'm so daft I can't recognize a contingency?" Her voice cut through the air, a precise strike meant to wound.
I stopped pacing and turned toward her, placing my hands on my hips, my muscles tense and straining. "She wasn't there for my benefit," Caitlyn continued, her glare unwavering. "You didn't trust me to follow through."
"Can you blame me?" I snapped, stepping closer. My voice lowered, but the weight behind it was no less intense. "How long were you sidled up with that shifty, self-serving war pig? She oinked poison in your ear, and you just ate it."
The words hit their mark. Caitlyn's jaw tightened, and in one swift motion, she grabbed a small figurine from the table beside her and hurled it to the ground. It shattered on impact, shards scattering across the floor.
"I know!" Caitlyn yelled, her voice breaking slightly as she perched on the armrest of the chair behind her. She buried her face in her hands for a moment before looking up again, her expression a mix of anger and guilt. "The only thing Jinx cared about was getting you to safety." She sighed heavily. "Then she just...surrendered. I didn't even have time to think before they hauled her off."
"She's being held in the bunker while I decide what to do," Caitlyn added, her voice quieter now but still firm.
"And people rightfully wanted y/n too. If they see her running loose, there's going to be extra chaos," Caitlyn said, her voice steady but sharp, as if she'd repeated this argument to herself a hundred times already."She can't even run!" I snapped, throwing my hands up. "She almost died, Caitlyn! Almost died! And the second she wakes up, you just haul her in with that fucker?" My voice cracked at the end, the frustration boiling over as I dragged a hand through my hair.
Caitlyn raised a brow, her expression hardening once more. "Officer Nolan."
"Who the fuck cares what her name is!" I shouted, the words ricocheting off the walls. My fists clenched at my sides, the helplessness clawing at my chest. "You just wanted someone to throw in a cage, someone to make all this look neat and clean for the people who want a damn show."
Caitlyn took a step forward, her arms dropping to her sides, her expression a mix of defiance and exhaustion. "I was waiting for you to recover," she said, her tone softening in a way that only made it worse. "I needed time to figure out what I could do."
I shook my head, the weight of her words hitting me differently this time. "Cait, you shouldn't wait for me to recover." My voice was quieter now, a sharp contrast to the fury that had filled the room moments ago. "There's no more us anymore. There never was."
