"Slippery as an eel," Jinx muttered, adjusting her binoculars as she sat low against the edge of her new existing base. Her signature smirk flickered on her lips, but there was tension in her voice.
She had sent Isha to recover something—some weapon she had given the man at the entrance. Now, I was here to deliver a warning about the plan we'd set into motion.
Was I a fan of Caitlyn being alone with Vi? Absolutely not. Am I a fan of Caitlyn manhandling Vi to make the plan work? Also, no. But did I have a choice in any of it? Unfortunately, no again.
Behind us, the sound of small, eager footsteps caught my attention. I turned to see Isha rushing toward us, her short legs moving as fast as they could manage. She arrived with an excited grin and quickly plopped herself between us, handing Jinx her weapon—a sleek, pistol now in need to be glowing faintly blue.
"I knew you could do it," Jinx said, her voice softening as she gave Isha an approving smile.
I reached over and ruffled Isha's small head of messy hair, earning a giggle from her before she eagerly leaned forward, taking Jinx's binoculars to peek through them herself.
For a brief moment, silence settled over us. The three of us sat there, the calm before the inevitable storm. I glanced at Jinx and caught her stealing a quick look at Isha, then at me. Her gaze softened in a way I rarely saw. Those vibrant eyes, often filled with chaos, seemed... wistful.
"Had some time to think lately," Jinx started, her voice unusually quiet.
Isha, sensing the shift in tone, looked up from the binoculars and turned her attention to Jinx. I did the same, curious where this was going.
"Ever since you dropped into my life, it's like I put on glasses," Jinx continued, her lips twitching into a half-smile as she hugged her knees to her chest.
She nodded. "Yeah, except I can't tell whether everything is blurry or clear..." Her voice trailed off, and for a moment, it was just the sound of the faint wind.
"And ever since you dropped back into my life," she added, her tone gaining an edge of frustration, "even though I can't even begin to ask why you'd do such a dumb thing, it's been like how it used to be when I was a kid. You remember? A walk in the park, but with you."
She chuckled softly at her own words, though there was no humor in it.
"I do," I said quietly, my own memories flickering back.
Jinx tilted her head slightly, resting her chin on her knees. "Do you remember when you used to read me your made-up stories? Those ridiculous fantasies? I would sit there, completely indulged, believing every word you said—even if it was just for a moment. I believed because of one story."
Her chuckle came again, this time more genuine.
Isha glanced between us, her small smile growing as if she could feel the warmth of those memories too, even though she hadn't been there.
