A YEAR AND A HALF AGO

"That looks stupid," Alex tells me from a FaceTime as I show him different thumbnails options. "Do the one on the left."

"Okay," I say as I turn the camera towards me. "That leaves me with a little less work, thank goodness."

"You need to take more breaks, Jac." Alex shuffles on his bed, so the camera falls over. He fixes it. "When was the last time you saw the sun?"

"Shut up." I roll my eyes. "It's not like you don't need to take breaks too."

"Whatever," he mumbles, focusing on something else for a moment before talking again. "I need your opinion," he says.

"On what specifically?" I ask, "I have many."

He scoffs. "I meant about going on a date."

My heart sinks just a bit. Alex and I's almost-kiss happened about a week ago, and neither of us have brought it up. I think it's just going to forever be one of those things we never speak of ever again, but the thought of him going on a date makes me uneasy.

"A date with who?" I ask as nonchalantly as I can.

"Her name's Jess." He taps on his screen a couple times. "She seems really nice, but I don't know how I feel about going on a date."

"What makes you so unsure?" I ask, trying my best to genuinely help him. I should just say no, but I don't want to have to explain why I'm saying no to him.

"I don't know if there's a future there, you know?" He sighs. "It just feels kind of... shallow in a way."

I think for a second, but he keeps talking as I go.

"Dream and George told me to go for it," he says.

"Well, if Dream and George say something, then we all have to do it, huh?" I joke with him. I like Dream and George. I would say I'm definitely closer to George than Dream, though. Dream and I have just never gotten that connection thing yet, but I guess there could still be hope for a great friendship.

"Shut up," he mutters, "You knew what I meant."

I sigh, ready to give my advice. I try to pretend I'm telling a different friend my advice, though. Anybody but Alex. "I think that you should go if it's just a date. I mean, what's the harm in one date?"

Alex chuckles a bit. "Yeah, you're right. It's not like I'm going to marry her, right?"

I smile. "I don't know, man. Maybe you'll be picking flowers out on date number three."

"That's more of a fifth date type of thing, Jac." Alex tells me. "Geez, get it right."

I put my hands up in defense. "What can I say? It's been a while since I've had feelings for someone."

Except for you, Alex. I'm pretty damn sure I have feelings for you.
