'Speak Now' by Taylor Swift

"Jac, are you okay?"
I glance up to Alex as his face comes into focus.
"You fell, Jac." Sapnap's face pops into my view.
I sit up. "I'm fine, what happened?"
"You fell." Alex chuckles as he offers a hand. "You're a klutz, Jac."
I roll my eyes and take his hand. When I stand up, I survey the room. It's familiar as two ties hang on some hooks. I glance at Alex, Nick and George in suits. Deja vu sweeps over me for a moment.
Are we at Alex's wedding?
"Thanks for your help," Alex says to me with a smile. "I needed someone to tell me I'm not crazy."
I open my mouth to speak. A part of me wants to tell him I take it back. I want to tell him not to get married, but I close my mouth and nod, not saying a word.
I sigh as I leave the room. Maybe I should say something to him. I can't live my entire life not knowing what could've happened. I have an opportunity, and I don't want to let this one go.
I turn around in the hall and turn the corner. I can see three guys turning another corner, but I couldn't tell who they were.
Nick is helping George with his tie. He spots me and smiles. "What's up? Can't leave us, Jac?"
"Where's Alex?" I ask, not answering his question.
"He's on his way to the altar like a big boy." George puts a hand on his chest sentimentally.
Nick laughs. "Did you really just call him a big boy?"
George says something else, but I don't fully hear it. All my brain focuses on is that Alex is on his way to get married now.
O O O
A bottle of whiskey is in front of me, and I'm taking some shots. I stand outside the doors that lead to the ceremony. They seem like the doors of dread, sealing my fate of forever not taking my chance.
"Drinking already, Jac?" A voice from behind mumbles.
I turn to see Dream in his full suit. It looks familiar. I know Dream a lot better now, and we have some sort of connection. I just can't put my finger on it.
"Shut up, Clay," I say, using his real name for a dramatic effect.
"Oh wow, you really got me there." Clay pretends to wince like it hurts before a smirk lights up his face. "Using my real name. I really am just emotionally and physically scarred for the rest of my life. My god, Jac. What have you done?"
I roll my eyes before taking another sip from my bottle. I long my arm to hand it to him, but he shakes his head.
"I got to be real focused for the whole standing-there-during-the-cermony thing."
I nod in understandment. "We can't have you being the groomsmen who fell and ruined the whole wedding. That's like, worst case scenario."
Clay raises his brow. "What if someone objected? Wouldn't that be the worst?"
A curtain opens in my brain with an idea. My one last chance to tell Alex I'm in love with him. I can see it as we meet at the back and get him away from Jess' awful family dressed in pastels.
No, I'm not the kind of person to barge on a white veil occasion, but Alex isn't the type of guy to be marrying the wrong person.
O O O
Jess walks down the aisle without a hair out of place. Everything is perfect. Well, actually the dress looks more like a pastry than anything, but it's still pretty. Alex smiles widely as she makes her way to him. Honestly, the music sounds more like a death march.
It makes me want to take another swig from my bottle, but it doesn't seem like an appropriate time at this very moment. The elderly couple to my left might frown upon it, so I keep the bottle tucked away nicely.
They officiant gets on with his whole spiel. I try to tune it all out and focus on something else. I scan my eyes around the room until another set meets them.
Clay smiles when we make eye contact. He gives a small, subtle thumbs up, indicating he hasn't fallen yet.
I give him a smile before pretending to focus on the wedding again.
"If anyone would like to object to this wedding," the officiant says finally, "speak now or forever hold your peace."
There's a silence in the room, and I realize this is my last chance. Ever.
My eyes want to immediately find Clay's again, but I refuse. My hands shake a bit, and my legs robotically straighten till I'm standing.
Jess' smile falls instantly as she sees me. Alex furrows his brow before looking to where hers fall. His expression has no emotion when he sees me.
I clear my throat, preparing myself for what I'm about to say.
"Don't say yes, Alex." My voice is thick with tears, and I can tell my face is heating up. I hold my ground, though. "Don't say your vows or anything like that if you're having any doubts. Take a minute. Or two. Or call off the wedding. Anything but just reconsider other possibilities."
Jess' jaw is dropped in disbelief. Clay's brows are raised. I can't tell if it's shock or disgust. Nick is smiling; he never liked Jess. At least one person will be proud of me. I think I wear all of their expressions, whether that's on the outside or deep down, but I hold a solid front of confidence.
Alex's lips curl into a smile, then he looks at Jess' expression and frowns. His head turns towards me, and he gives me a sad smile.
I can't tell if it means he's trying to be easy on me, and he's still going to get married. Or if he's happy someone pulled him out of this sad future. I'm voting for the latter.
My heart starts to race when his mouth opens to speak. I urge him in my head to speak now before... before... before..
Before I wake up.
I rub my eyes as I take in my surroundings. I'm in my own bed after I got home from Clay's house last night.
I sigh, knowing it wasn't real. Everything inside of me wishes it was, but in reality Alex got married. Alex is on his honeymoon.
I never spoke.
