Reading was like a portal into a different world. It provided an escape from reality and was a great way to pass time. Needless to say, you were a child that quite enjoyed reading books. Simple picture books that is. Books that didn't have very many words in it and instead had large images taking up most of the page.

It was perfectly normal for you to be reading lots of picture books as you were only in first grade. Obviously there were the smart kids who could somehow muster the strength and mental capacity to read books with actual words in them without any pictures, but you weren't one of them. And did you care? Absolutely not. Maybe one day in the far future you'd learn how to read "real" books with only words. That one day wasn't going to come anytime soon though, so you had all the time in the world to enjoy picture books to your heart's content.

During class most days, your first grade teacher did her best to provide reading time where you could enjoy whatever book you desired to read and even allowed for a few students at a time to head to the library to find new stories. Sometimes you went down to the library to find a new picture book or get the same books you'd already read simply because you enjoyed the pictures they had in them.

One of the smart kids in your class, Xingqiu, always had a "real" book with him. A book that had words in them and no pictures. You couldn't fathom how that boy was able to handle pages without a goofy image in it. What fun was there in reading when there weren't any pictures to accompany the story? That's why you liked books with images in them; so you could admire the colourful drawings.

There was one time where you attempted to read a book with only words in it, but that didn't turn out so well. You could read perfectly fine, it wasn't that reading was hard or anything. The words weren't hard to decipher, it was just that you couldn't stand looking at a bunch of words on a page because they'd just get jumbled up and make the story less appealing. Too many words made it harder to understand and enjoy the book.

That being said, picture books were your go to during reading time and always would be.

For the time being at least.

Xingqiu was one of the smart kids in your class for good reason. He was intelligent and very knowledgeable for a first grader. The boy probably had the highest grade in the class and more often than not he'd help out his fellow first grade classmates if they were ever stuck on something. You'd never asked him for help before since you never needed any help aside from those few times during writing lessons, but that was beside the point.
