He was definitely mixed or not white in the books. I think he was either Mexican or Puerto Rican in the books. That's mostly why he was targeted by socs in the books. Being anything other than white in the 60's wasn't very good for Johnny so that's probably why he kept quiet around anyone other than the gang because otherwise he would probably get beat up or jumped for saying or doing the wrong thing in public. Johnny was also described to be very small and slight (the average height of Mexican men is like 5'6 or 5'7) and he had a deep skin tone with black hair and black eyes. So that's concludes my headcanon.
