Vic and I were headed toward the exit of the school when suddenly he gently stopped us in front of the boys' bathroom.
"What is-" I began, but his index finger met his lips. He shushed me.
He whispered now holding that same hand up, "Hold on." My ears became more aware to the sound of a conversation going on inside."Who is Vic running around with Mike? Come on, I just wanna know! I thought for sure they'd talk and Vic would push him away, just like he's done everyone else. Now they seem close so, why is that? He's not even that cute," The first voice said in an annoying, preppy tone.
"Why do you wanna know? It's none of your business." Mike said footfalls making their way toward the bathroom before coming to an abrupt stop.
"Would you leave him alone, Alex?" Another voice filled the space, this one deeper and smoother.
"No. No I won't. I wanna know what's been up with Vic hanging out with that freak. Everyone has been speculating that they're together, and I thought there was no way that could be true until I saw him sit with them!"
I thought this place was supposed to be different. Those words made more rattle my mind. As if it happened yesterday, I could still hear my father's voice in my ears telling me I was worth nothing in a million different ways.
"Come on," Vic whispered pulling me out of my thoughts, I almost didn't notice he had grabbed my hand when we had began walking into the bathroom.Oh no, I really, really hate confrontation. I don't want to talk to whoever that is, please don't speak to me. If I have to defend myself, I'll look weak because I have nothing to say.
"What's going on here?" Vic asked, walking in. A dude with crazy hair threw his arms around Vic, and my eyebrows furrowed. A sudden protectiveness over Vic consumed me, and I wanted to throw whoever this was off of him. Luckily, my boyfriend pried the boy's hands off of him –unfortunately having to let my hand go–and looked at him with hardened eyes. "Excuse you. We are not together any more Alex. You know that." This must be the ex I heard about that night at the party. Vic was right about him not holding anything back, Alex seemed to have no filter at all.
Alex rolled his eyes, and that alone made me want to do the same thing to his head. These were times when I regretted not choosing to learn to fight.
"Are you kidding me, Vic? Don't tell me you really don't want me over that one!" The dirty blonde looked me up and down, pointing a finger at me before waving a hand down his body. "You've seen what I have to offer. Why aren't you taking it?"
The words dug at my chest, and I almost felt myself beginning to sink into the hole they dug. I wonder if more people in this school thought that about me. When Vic thought I had gotten hit, his reaction made me think bullying barely happened here. Now I'm not too sure. I hope there are no more copies of Alex in this school, I don't know if I'll be able to handle that. I was just starting to feel free."That one is my boyfriend, so yes, I would. I don't want what you have to offer because it's nothing compared to what Kellin does have to offer. Which is more than just a piece of ass, so much more."
Alex's jaw dropped to the floor and his eyes nearly popped out of his head. I couldn't help but go slack jawed myself, his words making me feel special but also catching me off guard. I know I haven't known Vic that long, but I had never heard him speak so...cold.
"Told you, you should've left it alone..." The second guy said in a low voice, his gaze falling to the floor as he stood against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest.
"Did you already know, Jack?" Alex stepped toward the taller male.
One corner of Jack's lips pulled back, thinning his them as he looked up at Alex with flecks of regret in his eyes. "I didn't want you to get hurt-"
"Whose side are you on??" Alex threw his hands up and let them slap against his thighs in frustration.
"You already know the answer to that. You know, I think this is dumb." Jack spoke honestly and with the guilt that still hung in his eyes, I could tell he hated having to be truthful. I was thankful he wouldn't play into his friend delusions, though, it'd only fuel the fire.
