when i awoke the following morning of calum's party, i found myself alone in the bed. the sunlight seeping through the blinds. a small pounding in the back of my head from the alcohol last night.
i stand up, looking in the mirror in the bathroom that neighbored the bedroom. my hair was a complete wreak. i attempt to comb it with my fingers. it didn't really work. i adjust my shirt and the sweatpants. i don't know why i was trying so hard to look decent. i had never tried.
"you look great." calum smiles from the door. i return a weak smile, ignoring his comment. his arms snake behind my back, his head rested on the top of mine. i turn to see his face, his hands placed on my hips now. our noses were inches from each other. in an awkward manner i raise my finger and poke his noes.
" boop." i mutter, i had never been good with boys. calum laughs, pulling me into a tight hug.
"i love you." he sighs in the silence. i freeze instantly. not one boy has yet to tell me those three words. chills run through my veins, giving me goosebumps.
at the moment i realized in the short few weeks i knew calum, i had fallen for him. he was the reason i was trying. he gave me chills. i loved him. i loved the way he played with zoe. i loved when he talked about music. i loved seeing him waiting for me after work. i loved the walks to his car. i loved car pooling with calum. and i especially loved calum.
i knew i had to say the words back. "i love you too." my voice cracks, nervous of rejection and abandonment.
calum pulls out from the hug, making my stomach drop. then, his fingers run along my jaw, cradling my head he lifts me to his lips. pressing ours lips together. i mold mine into his, forgetting everything i once held onto.
interrupting our personal time together, i hear my phone begin to go off. this was perfectly planned to ruin the moment. i groan, parting from calum to get my phone. he leans on the door way, watching me as i answer.
"hello" my accent rings through the aussie apartment.
"esme! thank god you picked up!" the familiar tone of my sister's voice.
"yes." i say, short. my eyes wander to calum, studying his tall figure and ruffled hair.
"i'm at your door, open up." i can sense the preppy girl behind the phone. she was the cheerleader, i was the geek.
"my door? why are you at my apartment?" my eyebrows knit together.
"surprise!" she bursts, calum shifts in his spot. "now, open up. you can't stay in bed all day."
"i-i am not home." i state, nervous she would cause me of sleeping around.
"what are you doing? grocery shopping at six am?" she chuckles hard. i plop down on the bed, shoving on one of my shoes and tying it.
"i'll be back soon, quinn."
"well hurry!" my opposite blonde sister giggles. we foiled each other majorly.
i hang up, dropping my hands to my lap. i didn't want to leave calum.
"i'll drive you." he grins, pulling out our jackets from the coat closet. i bundle up, knowing the bitter cold will nip on our noses.
the ride is completely silent, not even a green day cd played solidly in the background.
we had told each other we lived each other, and at least for me it was something i had never felt before.
arriving seven blocks down, calum helps me out.
"you should stay, quinn is very... picky on people." i scrunch my nose up.
"it's okay, i don't mind."
we ride up, seeing the bright blonde sitting cross legged on my door. her thumbs were spent tapping at her phone screen.
"esme!" she jumps up, embracing me then noticing the raven haired boy. "is this your friend?"
i nod stiffly. calum stood tall, next to me. she eyes him, taking in his whole presence.
"where you at his house?" she sounds disgusted almost.
"yes."
"oh."
"why are you here?"
"i came to visit my favorite sister!" she cheers, throwing in some jazz hands.
"i'm your only sister."
"you should go..." she directs calum.
"calum, and i won't be leaving, esme invited me over." he sasses her, which she is taken back by this.
"esme, please tell your boy toy over here we need our girl time." quinn takes my hands in her, i immediately whip them out. she slaps my hand, not accepting my reaction.
"calum, quinn and i need our time." i stuffer. i didn't want to kick him out at all, but quinn always got her way.
"alright." he sighs sadly, hugging me and leaning in to my ear. "i will be in my car." his whisper is soothing to my nerves.
i watch him leave the apartment. quinn's glare burning in his back.
