luke chose out a movie to watch, i hadn't been paying much attention to the film. it had the archetype of the boy gets and girl, mixed with the hero saves the day.

when the film ended, luke got up and left to the the right side of the flat, where his room lay. calum guides me to his, on the left side.

throwing me a t-shirt, calum gets dressed for bed. i slide on the large shirt over my head, peeling off my jeans, and snuggling under the covers. his arm wraps around my body. we did not speak with our mouths, but the silence spoke for us.

"esme?" calum's voice croaks after moments.

"yes?" i sniffle out to him.

"when you were younger, what job did you want? what did you plan to do? why aren't you doing it? no ones dream us to work at a coffee shop."

"that's a tough question, but i know the answer. do you recall when i told you i had played the violin?" he nods, "well, i had planned to do that. play until the arthritis in my hands took over and i could play no more. my sisters mental health took it away, it was for the best. after that i was unsure what to do, and now i'm here. what about you?" my words flow off my tongue so smoothly, cal was easy to talk to.

"i too love music, hence me working at a music shop. one day i hope to have enough money to open up my own music store where i can teach others how to play instruments and stuff."

"that would be a good job for you." i smile even though he can't see through the darkness.

his hands cup my cheeks, placing a soft kiss on my forehead. he turns over, closing his eyes to sleep, i do the same, or at least attempt to. the chattering silence gives me chills, keeping me eyes wide.

but you can't win all staring contests, especially with the dark, so i fade to sleep.
