Friday had come very quickly which meant Mari only had that day to determine wether she wanted to take up Gelo's offer of staying with him. She'd been conversing with Jaden about pros and cons for the last two days. They'd come up with quite an interesting list.
Pros: Protection, Perfect distance between Durham and Charlotte, Alone 90% of the time
Cons: Melo might visit and fuck it all up
One visit from LaMelo would cause a whole bunch of unnecessary drama. Her location would be revealed and he'd have complete acces to her if Gelo wasn't home.
Jaden- The safest place you could be right now, is anywhere outside the state of North Carolina.
She said, looking at the girl who was spread out across her couch.
Mariah- Anywhere I go he'll find me. Might as well just go with the safest option.
Mari was tired of running. She wanted to stay in one place, and have her life go back to how it was, before Melo ruined it again. When she moved away thought she'd finally be free of him, only for it to slap her in the face. To Mari, it felt like God didn't want her to be happy.
After all the missing persons reports on her and Melo announcing to everybody and their mother that Mariah was his supposed "baby momma", Josh dropped her. He didn't want any part of it.
Mari didn't think it was fair. Melo got to be with all these different girls but as soon as she tries to move on he always finds a way to ruin it.
Josh was her first attempt to be her own person and she really liked him, but as always, Melo didn't allow it.
Jaden- I say you just go live with Dmo.
Mari straight faced her.
Mariah- Dmo and I haven't lived in the same house since I was fourteen or fifteen. Wherever Zo goes, he goes.
It sucked knowing Mariah started losing a connection with her uncle during high school because those were some of the times she needed him most. When Dmo moved to LA for the first time, she had to live with Lavar until she was old enough to drive.
Jaden- Damn. I can't even imagine what that feels like.
Mariah- Yeah, well that's what happens when your dad dies and leaves you with a sixteen year old uncle who knows nothing about childcare.
Jaden but her cheek, not knowing if it was okay for her to ask the question she really wanted to know. Everyone knew Mariah's legal guardian was Dmo, but no one knew why.
Jaden- If you don't mind me asking, what happened to your mom?
Mariah- She's in jail. Got arrested when I was four. I don't remember her very much.
Jaden- What for?
Mariah- Shooting my dad.
Jaden's eyes widened at how casual Mariah sounded about all of this. Her mouth formed into an "O" shape. The woman was too stunned to speak.
Mariah- Yeah, she was secretly an in debt crack addict and he wouldn't give her any money.
She said, sitting up normally to look Jaden in the eyes. After a couple seconds Mari started laughing and Jaden didn't know why.
Mariah- I'm just kidding. She didn't shoot him. He was in the military and he jumped on onto a bomb to save someone, I guess.
The other girl let out a shaky laugh, not really expecting anything like that.
Jaden- Oh.
Mariah- But I was serious about my mom. She was a crackhead and they found at least four or five pounds in her house. She was arrested, a social worker took me to California, and here we are now.
Jaden- How many years did they give her?
Mariah- She was a repeat so I think..seventeen?
Jaden- That means she gets out this year. Cause you turn twenty one this year and seventeen plus four is twenty one! Are you gonna see her?
Mari's face went blank. She didn't want any reminder that her mother was going to be released later that year.
Mariah- Absolutely not. She literally used me as a human shield when cops raided her. You don't do that to a four year old. Do you know how mentally scarring that is??
Jaden- Yeah, point taken.
Next to her, Mariah's phone started buzzing.

Jaden- Who's that?
Mariah- Gelo.
She replied, rolling her eyes and accepting the call, putting it on speakerphone.
Gelo- Have you decided?
