Lazlo sat on his best friend's couch with his mouth agape. Philip Wang had apologized. Philip had called himself out on the ways in which he had failed him as a best friend and it shocked him.
Lazlo had known the vampire for years and accepted him for who he was though he felt there was more, but the Philip Wang standing before him wasn't quite the same man he knew.
"I accept your apology, bro, but we're good. I accepted you for who you are a long time ago. I don't care that you're an emotionless bastard, but I do care that you used it to abuse your mate. That shit isn't cool."
Philip nodded his head dejectedly. "I have to get her back, Lazlo." Philip sighed causing the vampire to laugh. "To get someone back you had to have had them in the first place. You made sure that was not the case for you and Freya Draven by dissing her at every turn."
Philip groaned as he threw his head back against the couch. "Lucifer said a grand gesture is the way to go and I have one in mind that I'm sure she'll love, but Mason says words are the real magic and I have no idea what I could possibly say to get her to forgive and believe me."
Lazlo looked at his best friend who hadn't really changed all that much in all honesty. He was still Philip Wang, but more. Where everyone emoted at a boil, Philip went from nothing to a low simmer. Lazlo knew this was Freya's doing and he was happy about it.
"Do you remember what Freya's face looked like when she found out you cheated?" Lazlo brought up causing Philip to still but nod. "Hold that expression at the front of your mind. Feel her heartbreak. Feel her anger and sadness, but mostly her disappointment. Then respond with words that are powerful enough to not only erase that image from your mind, but the memory from her heart." Lazlo shrugged. "If that fails think of your words as the last thing she'll hear before tragically dying."
Philip looked at him crazily. "What? It's from a song my aunt used to always sing. Something about loving your partner like you're going to lose them. It applies, Philip, because a future with your mate is not promised and you need to pull out all the stops to ensure you at least gave it your all." He nodded at Lazlo before sighing heavily. Lazlo and him sat there for a few minutes before Lazlo spoke up.
"Do you love her?" Philip sat with the question. He had known familial love. He loved his parents and his sister. He even loved Roscoe. However, romantic love was something he had never recognized.
"How do I know?" Lazlo chuckled at him. "I need to make you a playlist of some of my grandma's and mom's songs. I think they'll help you. Hold on." Philip watched as his best friend typed away before his phone started dinging.
"How Will I Know by Whitney Houston. Who's that?" Philip asked causing Lazlo to shake his head. "I blame myself honestly." Lazlo spoke up. Philip chuckled at him. "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing...This I Promise You...All My Life..." Philip read over the expansive list.
"What is this, Laz?" Lazlo patted him on the back. "These are songs that will break open your pandora's box of buried emotions for your mate. They will give you the motivation to say what you need to say."
Philip just shook his head at his best friend. "I'm going to roll these good blunts while you sync the playlist with your speakers. Weed and music to get your emotional juices flowing." Lazlo said pulling out what he needed.
Philip did as he was told and listened as a song called 'She Will Be Loved' by Maroon 5 began playing. Philip smoked and listened and with each song from the 80's, 90's and early 2000's, he felt like his mind and heart were being opened.
There were many songs that resonated with him, but the song that stuck out most was a unique and cooky number called 'I'm Yours' by a Jason Mraz.
The words seemed to encapsulate what he was feeling. It was their God forsaken right to be loved and he was done complicating their time, because it was indeed short.
