Chapter 19
Adele's POV

I run up to Raleigh's room the next evening with Rose, and the two of us search for her journal with the Chain of Gold pdf in it.

"So, ghosts may be able to help us?" Rose asks, flopping on Raleigh's bed.
I nod.
"They can see anything, hear anything, and there are two ghosts nearby, which is why we need Lucie."

Rose flips through the book.
"They're going to find Gast, who's dead, and then Luce will want to speak to Jesse about it."
I nod again.
"Pocket the book, Rose. We'll need to confront Lucie before she can do anything to stop us."

The two of us rush out and head down the stairs.

A commotion is going on outside, and the two of us open the big doors to see Will, Tessa, Matthew, James, Lucie and Cordelia all standing outside, bickering with one another.

I nudge Rose with my shoe and she nods.
We have to get Lucie alone.

The children go inside, and I tap Lucie on the shoulder as she passes us.

"Hello Miss Herondale," I say politely.
"Ah, you may call me Lucie," She replies. "And you are?"
"Adele Herondale, but you can call me Adele if you wish."

Lucie nods, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.

"May Rosalie and I join your brother and your friends? The Institute is rather boring sometimes."
"Why of course, we're just going to chat in my quarters."
I smile.
"Come on, Rose."

The two of us follow the four of them into Lucie's room.
All of us flop on a piece of furniture, and Lucie summons Jessamine.

"Can ghosts lie?" Lucie asks as Jessamine firms the outline of herself to everyone.
She looks around the room.
"Oh Rosalie, Ashton, Adele, how good it is to see you three again!" Jessamine exclaims, ignoring Lucie's questions.

The two girls beam, and I smile.
Antony mutters something like 'Good to see you too, Jessie.'

Jessamine scoffs and summons a book from the shelf, it hit him in the back of his head.
"Ow," He complains.
Ashton and Matthew snicker.

"Hello, Jessamine," Raleigh says. "It's good to see you again."
Jessamine frowns.
"Still running around England, getting high with Will, Raleigh?"

Raleigh's blue eyes widen, her face blushing bright red.
"Technically we were searching for Jem's-"

Jessamine cuts her off.
"Let's not speak about Jem, please. He's gone through enough. But your help was appreciated."
Raleigh nods.
Antony rubs her back gently.

The 1900s kids look in shock.
Lucie recovers quietly by repeating her question.

Jessamine sighs.
"Ghosts can lie, but there is powerful necromancy that make a ghost tell the truth."
She makes a comment to Matthew about Henry, which Ashton quickly retorts.

Henry is one of Ashton's close friends, and she stands up for him.
Another thing I love about her.

Jessamine disappears when a clashing noise sounds outside.
Raleigh, James and Lucie rush to the window.

"It's Charles's carriage, and Grace is in it." Lucie says.
She makes a gasping noise.
"Tatiana. There's been another attack."

Ashton mutters something that sounds like 'ew, that mother trucker' while Raleigh makes a disgusted noise at the mention of Grace.
The two of them don't like Tatiana and her daughter, for things that happen in the upcoming years.

James runs off immediately, while Cordelia and Matthew look out the window.

A few minutes later, Raleigh and Cordelia go down to find James at Lucie's request.
The rest of us sit down.
Lucie and Matthew bicker about his drunkenness, and Rosalie looks at Ashton and I with wide eyes.

"Poor Lucie," I mouth to them.
Ashton nods, her red curls bouncing.

Matthew storms out abruptly, leaving Lucie in shock.
Rosalie follows him out.

Ashton walks over to Lucie.
"Are you okay, Luce?"
She nods.
"Matthew is always like this, I'm just trying to provide help so he doesn't get my brother harmed. They are parabatai, if you weren't aware."

Ashton nods.
"May I give you a hug?"
Lucie nods again, and Ashton hugs her.

Ashton looks up at me, when Jessamine appears again.

"Ack-" I say, getting spooked.
Jessamine chuckles.
"Can I ask a ghost question?" I ask.

Lucie's eyes widen slightly.
Jessamine nods.

"Can ghosts leave clues to their murderer? If they were killed and someone alive was looking for who killed them?"
Jessamine nods, considering it.

"Who are you looking for, the murderer?" Lucie asks.
"My sister," Ashton mutters, sitting next to me.
Lucie and Jessamine's eyes widen.

"That's who sent you guys all those years ago," Jessamine mutters.
I nod.
"What did your sister do?" Lucie asks.

Ashton sighs.
"She killed a vampire named Phe, a faerie named Rue, and a fellow shadowhunter named Atticus. All from America."

Lucie nods.
"Well, I know a ghost, who can help. He's very kind."
Jessamine mutters a 'hang on' and disappears.

I smile.
"That sounds great. Exactly what we need."
