Slowly the seasons had started to change. Summer turned into fall. Fall turned into winter. And the next thing Pepper knew it was about to be Christmas. She held Morgan's hand as the two shopped for Christmas gifts.
"I still need a gift for Auntie Carol and Auntie Val." Morgan said looking over her checklist "Oh no I forgot Daddy!" Pepper's smile faded. She hadn't talked to Tony. Since the day of the barbeque.
"We'll pick something up for them later." Pepper said her voice quieter than before.
"Mummy, can Daddy come on Christmas when Auntie Nat and Uncle Steve come?"
Pepper felt her throat dry out "I'll check Momo." She said stuttering through her words. Morgan squealed, proceeding to skipped the rest of the way to the car. Later that day once Morgan was tucked into bed Pepper pulled out her phone ringing Steve.
"Steve Rogers." He answered seriously.
"Sorry new number it's Pepper."
"Hi Pepper." He spoke cheerily as ever "How are you doing."
"Good, sorry to bother you but I need to ask you something."
"Of course," Steve responded instantly.
"I was wondering how Tony was doing?"
Steve went silent before speaking "He's doing a lot better. He's working four days. He's off of alcohol. He sold his place and has been staying with Rhodey while he gets his life back together. He's trying Pepper. He's really trying."
Pepper couldn't help but smile "Morgan was wondering if he could come on Christmas so I thought I'd better talk to you." She could practically see Steves grin through the phone
"I'll check with him but I'm sure he's more than happy to come!"
"Thank you," Pepper responded before bidding her goodbye.
"Mummy come in here," Morgan whispered.
"Morgan Hope Stark what on Earth are you doing up this late young lady!" Pepper demanded sternly.
Morgan frowned "I'm sorry Mama I just, I just had to finish it." Pepper curiously followed Morgan into her room and her heart swelled at the sight. On a piece of cardboard, Morgan had glued pictures of Tony, Pepper, and Morgan all together. The picture of them at the beach. At the annual Stark industries party. At Thor's wedding. It pained Pepper yet gave her so much relief at the same time.
"Daddy's going to love that so much, sweetie." Morgan smiled
"Really?"
"Really really." Pepper smiled. It was impossible to stay mad at her daughter "But right now you need to sleep, missy." Morgan giggled. Pepper went back to her bed only to hear the pitter-patter of footsteps.
"Mama, can I sleep with you?" Morgan whispered.
"Of course Momo." For what felt like the first time in years. Pepper Potts actually got a good night's sleep.
