Other than the rhythmic thuds of the horses' hooves and my tense breaths, the carriage was filled with uneasy silence. My lover gently reached out, clasping my hand in his, his warm breath against my ear as he told me to get some rest.

I jerked awake to the rattling of the carriage and frantic yelps of the horse. "W-what's happening?"

Suddenly, the carriage tipped over before it plunged into an ocean of water. My scream was swallowed as the water closed above my head. Water rushed in through the open windows and doors as I choked on a mouthful of dirt-tasting water.

The carriage was sinking fast. My lover wrapped a protective arm around my waist, attempting to pull us both to the surface. I thrashed around as my lungs burned and my vision blurred. I felt my lover yanking me out of the fatal carriage, attempting swimming towards the bank of the river.

I knew he was trying to save us. But I was in a panic. I was drowning. I couldn't breathe. My eyes were stinging, my lungs were screaming for air and water was gushing in my mouth and nose, something slimy was tugging at my ankles...

With dark spots clouding my vision, I shoved him away. I would only weigh him down. With my last moment of consciousness, I saw arms pulling the man onto the shore.

My eyes flew open, my heart pounding in my chest. Beads of sweat trickled down my face, my damp hair sticking to my forehead. The room held a heavy scent of cleaning products and sprays. My head throbbed as I sat up.

Where am I? Who am I?

"Amanda?" The door creaked open and a man stepped in, his hair streaked with gray. He gulped as he ran his fingers through his strands of unkempt hair, a gesture of unease as he approached me on the bed.

I frowned. Who was he? Was I in the hospital?  Why couldn't I remember anything?  "Do I know you?" My voice came out slurred, my thoughts muddled and clouded with haze.

The doctor's face softened, a flicker of sympathy in his eyes. "I'm Doctor Cruze. You're in the RiversHealth hospital."

What?!

"You fell into a coma and were unconscious for five years," the doctor explained carefully, hesitant.

I gasped. "Five years?! You have to be joking! Why would I be in a coma! What happened?!"

"According to your birth certificate, your name is Amanda Jane Skylark. The police couldn't locate any relatives, family or any friends you had."

Drawing himself closer, the doctor lowered his voice, his eyes filled with a mixture of empathy and uncertainty. "You fell into a coma and were unconscious for five years. It's understandable that you might feel frightened or confused."

I didn't respond, my teeth sinking into my bottom lip.

"Let's do a quick check up. Oh, and your brain cells suffered damage during your coma. The dreams you had during this time don't hold any significant meaning or importance. Do you understand?"

I shrugged.

"Do you understand?" Panic and desperation flickered in his eyes.

"Yea."

He released a breath of relief. "Come with me now, I'll give you your check up."

I stepped out of the hospital, my body clad in a simple, brown dress with an intricate white lace chest cover. My eyes scanned the bustling streets, but I couldn't seem to recognize a single familiar face.
