I walk down the street with the warm sun on my shoulders, a cigarette held between my lips as the smoke rises up in front of my sunglasses. The boys have work to do and they insisted I take the day off, so I figured a little solo day in Nashville would be the way to go. My freshly manicured nails flash in front of my eyes before I pull the cigarette from my lips and toss it on the ground, stomping it out on the concrete with the toe of my heeled boot before walking into the cafe I once worked in.
I pull the sunglasses up into my hair, pushing the freshly dyed locks back out of my face. I didn't want any major change, and I didn't want to damage my hair too much, but some highlights and lowlights made just the right amount of difference. I spot Alex at the counter and internally curse myself for choosing to come here. I shake the feeling quickly, finding it unworthy of ruining my good mood as I approach the familiar countertop.
"What can I get you?" Alex asks, not noticing it was me until she finally looks up. She purses her lips together in realization as I pull my wallet out of my purse.
"I'll just have 4 black coffees and an earl grey, please. All mediums," I say with a small nod, watching her enter everything before giving me my total and taking the card I held out between my index and middle fingers.
She gives back my card along with a receipt, opening her mouth before thinking for a moment.
"Earl grey for Josh?"
I nod quickly and stuff my wallet back into my bag. "Yeah, they've been rehearsing all day so I'm sure his throat is shot."
She nods her head in a slow manner, as though she wanted to say something else but felt too awkward to.
"Well, it was nice seeing you. I hope you're doing well," I say, flashing her a quick smile and heading to the other counter to wait for my drinks.
Once I get the drinks in their carrier, I push the glasses back onto the bridge of my nose and give Alex a friendly wave before heading out of the cafe.
When I reach my car just a few blocks away, I get in and drive myself to the studio. After pulling in, I get the coffee holder into one hand, pulling the door open with the other to find all of the boys sitting around the table jotting things down, each of them stopping and looking up as I come in.
"Hard at work?" I ask, bringing the coffees over with a smile, setting one in front of each of the guys before setting the tea in front of Josh. "Earl grey, should still be hot."
They each thank me as I place the cups down before sitting down beside Jake.
"I like the new look MJ," Danny smiles, pointing at my hair as I push it back with my glasses the same way I did earlier.
"Well thank you, Daniel, once you get your highlights redone we'll be like twins."
He sends me a friendly smile which I return, feeling Jake pick my hand up in his and run his thumb over the smooth polish on my nails. "You have a fun day off?" He asks, letting my hand rest back on my lap as his eyes gloss over my hair with the corners of his lips drawn into a smile.
"It was perfect, but I could just feel you all missing me too much to carry on," I joke, looking over at the other boys as they sip their drinks.
"Well, you look marvelous, dear MJ. And thank you for the tea, you're very thoughtful," Josh nods, holding his cup up as if to cheers before taking another sip.
Sam sits up after setting his cup down, shifting his body to face me, "wanna come to Frankenmuth?" He asks, earning frustration from the other guys around the table.
"I was gonna ask her tonight!" Jake groans, making me look at him with furrowed eyebrows.
"Anyone wanna fill me in?"
