"Evelyn," "Evelyn"

The boys would call to each other, they didn't know why but they did.

"Why do we bother to stay?"

They were runaways, they lived in poverty, and they couldn't eat most days.

"Why are you running away?"

North Dakota has tried to run away before but felt guilty leaving South.

"Don't you feel like severing?"

They had been ever so close, inseparable most days.

"Everything's just come together at last"
"It's broken, I don't want to play"

South Dakota had been more optimistic, always trying to make the most of something.

"We grew up closer than most"

That was true, they may be very different but they loved each other.

"Closer than anything," "closer than anything"

North Dakota, was more easily angered than his twin.

Shared our bed and wore the same clothes

South Dakota more over followed the others' direction, knowing it was best.

Talked about everything, spoke about so many things

They made sure they knew each other's secrets, and they shared everything.

What shall we wear tonight? What shall we eat today?

They were always together, no matter what.

"Can we go ice skating?" "But we just did that yesterday"

They did activities together if one was injured the other stayed with them.

"Should we be firemen?" "Can we be astronauts?"

They had heard about the White House and its growing 'team'

"What if they find us?" "They're not looking anyway"

They weren't identical but if they tried they could be.

"Evelyn," "Evelyn"

They called to each other, if one was lost, they called out Evelyn.

"Why do we bother to stay?"

It was their deceased sister after all, when she died, they vowed to call upon her to help find the other.

"Why are you running away?"

South tried to run away but got caught, and that was the end of that.

"Don't you feel like severing?"

Not like they would leave each other anyhow.

"Everything's just come together at last"
"It's broken, I don't want to play"

The duo never fought, sure they disagreed but never fought.

Fill my glass, let's drink a toast

They decided to eat the same things, and drink the same.

"This is our birthday," "so why are we weeping?"
"At your side", "I feel like a ghost"

South Dakota always felt to be in North's shadow, but he put up with it.

I wake up first, and I stare at you sleeping
