TW: car accident spoken of, cursing.

They had successfully made it almost half an hour without having Florida, California, Texas, or Louisiana starting a fight. Which meant, they were overdue.

Sometimes, you look the same
Just like you did before the accident
When you're staring into space
It's hard to believe you don't remember it
Woke up in the ambulance
You pieced it all together on the drive

California had something brewing, Texas was just asking too many questions once again. Some of them, you could understand why; others? He just asked to piss someone off.

I know you don't remember calling me
But I told you, even then you looked so pretty
In a hospital bed
I remember you said you were scared
And so was I

And to piss someone off he did exactly that, California was reaching his bullshit limit for the day. He hadn't had coffee, hadn't gotten proper sleep in days, and to top it all off, Florida had rearranged his bookshelf.

In a stand-still on The Five,
thought it was unusually early traffic
Usually, I don't panic,
I just wanted to be on time
When I saw the ambulances on the shoulder,
I didn't even think of pulling over

California knew something the other states didn't about Texas, it was that he was recently in a car accident. A bad one. And Texas surprisingly wouldn't stop blaming himself, and well,

I pieced it all together late that night
And I know you don't remember calling me
But I told you, even then you looked so pretty
In a hospital bed
I remember you said you were scared
And so was I

Since California is a naturally curious state, and Texas always thinking about that accident, wouldn't help him in an argument, he decided it was time to find out. "You know what?! Let me ask you a few questions!"

"What if it happened to you on a different day?
On a bridge, where there wasn't a rail in the way?"

He watched as the colour damn near drained from Texas's face.

"Or a neighbourhood street where the little kids play?
Or the Angeles Crest in the snow or the rain?
What if you weren't alone?
There were kids in the car?"

Confused looks from all the other states.

"What if you were remote?
No one knows where you are?
If you changed anything, would you not have survived?
You're alive! you're alive!"

And Texas's face remained stone cold as he finally realized something, something crucial.

'you're alive!'

California then froze, anxious to see his reaction. He never said what was happening so hopefully no one put 2 and 2 together, but they probably did...

'And I know you don't remember calling me
But I told you, even then you looked so pretty
In your hospital bed
I remember you said you were scared
And so am I'

How did California know? The hospital called the statehouse and he was the one who picked up. And he didn't even think twice about getting to the hospital, it didn't matter who, he just knew they needed help. He wasn't that heartless, he had almost lost his brother in a car accident, and he wasn't going to let that almost happen again.
